Penelope Cruz reveals salon's acting secrets

Penelope Cruz has revealed the inspiration behind her decision to become an actress: watching women in her mother's hairdressing salon.

In an interview for Vanity Fair magazine the 35-year-old Spanish actress, who won a best supporting actress Oscar last year for Vicky Cristina Barcelona, described the salon in Madrid as "mesmerising".

Posing for photos reclining on an unmade bed, she added: "I'd pretend to do homework, but I was observing the women - what they were hiding, how they left feeling a little different. They treated it a bit like a psychologist's office. It was my first acting school."

The notoriously private Cruz also denied reports that she is pregnant. She sparked Hollywood rumours recently when she was reportedly spotted leaving a gynaecologist's office with boyfriend Javier Bardem. Cruz currently stars in Pedro Almodóvar's Broken Embraces and Rob Marshall's Nine.

Vanity Fair
She described Scarlett Johansson, whom she kissed in Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Charlize Theron, a kissing partner in 2004's Head In The Clouds as "pretty beautiful partners".

The November issue of Vanity Fair is out on 6 October.
