Tony Blair
Main contender: the former PM said “it is good to have fans”

Blair to be named EU President 'within weeks'

Paul Waugh, Deputy Political Editor
02.10.09

Tony Blair is on course to become EU President by the end of the month.

The former prime minister's candidacy for the new post will be rushed through as quickly as possible if Ireland votes "Yes" in its referendum on the Lisbon Treaty today.

Mr Blair is among the favourites to become the first President of the European Union, a role that will restore him to the world stage and boost his long-term income.

And the former Prime Minister could take the European top job as early as 29 October.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has thrown his weight behind a Blair bid. When French foreign minister Bernard Kouchner was asked yesterday if Mr Blair was the only real candidate, he said: "For the moment, indeed". The former premier has refused to rule himself in or out of the running, but said that "it is good to have fans" for a possible candidacy.

Behind the scenes, allies say that while he is not pushing himself forward, discreet soundings have shown him to be the leading contender.

The President will be selected by leaders of the EU's 27 nations, rather than face direct election by voters.

The post cannot exist until the Lisbon Treaty is formally ratified by all member states and officials across Europe would scramble to move forward this weekend if Ireland votes "Yes". Sweden, which chairs the bloc this year, wants a president named by the end of this month.

The only real obstacle in Mr Blair's path is if Poland and the Czech Republic delay their own ratification of the Treaty.

The Tories claim that the two countries could take up to six months to do so, creating the possibility that a Cameron government could also block Mr Blair's candidacy.

Senior Conservative sources today said that the Tory leader would "definitely oppose" Mr Blair's bid for the job. The party is determined not to have the former Labour leader hovering over a Cameron administration and possibly exposing problems with its European policy.

The election of Tony Blair to any position of any responsiblity within the EU would be a gross insult to the people of Britain who have suffered the results of the Blair regime for the past 12 years. If President Sarkozy delivers a slap in the face to voters in the UK by sanctioning this ridiculous appointment I shall consider that the French have declared war on the British.
Next time I go to France I'll find some way to take it out on the French.

- Yvonne, Chiswick, UK

It is a tragedy, but unfortunately Britain is now just a province of Europe. What various nations have failed to do over the centuries has been achieved, i.e., the complete subjugation of your once great country. And you're not even allowed to have a say on whether you wanted this. Those responsible should be put on trial for treason, and I am NOT joking.

- James Wells, Perth, Australia

It seems to me that the EU is threatening Ireland with economic sanctions etc if they vote No again.

I come from Irish Stock; and I think to threaten the Irish is a bad mistake; they are natural rebels with courage; and do not take bullying lightly, as the British well know.

We have seen the moneymen try to frighten the Irish people recently; they were told No once by the Irish People; is the EU deaf, or just power mad?

My money is on a No again, its the ordinary Irish people that count; not the moneymen.

How about the British being given the same right to vote, Gordon Brown?

Or are you the same as Tony Blair; another future King of the Universe, that lacks true democracy?

WW2 was a waste of time fighting in my opinion; because our true freedom was sold off long ago under both colours of British Governments since the end of WW2.

Shame on all you British politicians, you soild us all out for money and personal power.

- Mickinlondon, london

Yet one more reason for Ireland to vote No. Blair was an utter disaster as PM, and to think a British PM would be King over Ireland?

- Hari Seldon, Fort Rouge, Canada

Can someone please stop this... WE DON'T WANT BLAIR

- Michael, Cheshunt

The appointment of B liar as President of Europe will be nothing short of a crime, he is a proven liar, a war criminal and devoid of morals. It will take a few short days before the lovely cherie elevates herself to "first lady of europe " and the whole arrogant greedy roadshow will begin again. It is clear why we british were denied a vote, why horrific kinnock was placed into brussels and why mandy was brought back into the fold yet again, please God vote no in Ireland and save us from this.

- Alan Davey, London Uk

Remember Churchill. In our darkest hour as a nation he inspired us to greater things. Never, never, never .. give in.
There is in England a pride about which is never spoken, a will to endure which is under estimated, a goodness which no one appreciates.
The EU is a corrupt busted flush. The rest of the world knows this!
St George for Merry England and the hell with the rest!

- James Macleod Ritchie, Oyster Bay Cove

Well said Brendan Marsh of Dublin. The whole concept of the EU is anathema to democracy. Overweening bureaucrats in distant palaces dishing out diktats to citizens who are consistently denied a say in the running of their own lives. How sad that the UK has to beg Ireland to vote no and save us from our morally and politcally bankruot politicians. Come the general election I feel sure I will have to vote UKIP, if only to get us out of the EU once and for all. Give us a referendum NOW!

- London Lass, London

Fantastic: a war criminal as President of Europe.

What al ong way we have come.

- Peter, London, UK

I fear for Europe - look at the mess he has made of the UK - a disaster and hopefully the European leaders will see sense before he sets Europe to war with the rest of the world. The man is a joke who has sought to clear his conscience by turning to religion and blaming God for his lies and ill judged decisions

- Debbie, London

Did nobody notice that the French and Germans were yesterday talking about how Tony Blair was a spent force from the past and that they were going to unite to remove the corrupting influences of the UK from positions of power within the EU as the UK model had proven to be wrong. France and Germany are uniting to form a strong power in Europe and run it as they see fit and being quite smug and arrogant about it. The EU needs massively rationalising and the bureaucracy reducing however those now in the driving seat are looking to do the opposite.

- Mark, Liverpool

Well there you go I always thought the electors elected presidents.
EUSSR not far to go now to reach Mugabe standards and they tell us to embrace this bunch of freewheelers, absolutely disgusting by any standards you care to mention.

- Roy.C, wigan.england.

Soldiers die, civilians die, and the lying war monger responsible will become President Blair and get to live in a new palace. He has sold everyone and everthing down the river in order to attain this goal. See today's European Tribune, it seems the idea of an EU President was mooted by Tony Blair in the first place. Europeans have put together a "Stop Blair eu petition" - they have so much revulsion for this utterly vile proposal.

- Morag, Malpas UK

To Lars1, Europe. Take a look at the contributions of each country into the eu coffers before you make idiotic statements like that. The eu needs our money more than we need it!

- Wen, Oxfordshire, England

If the Irish vote YES tomorrow (one can only hope that they are smarter than look and vote NO) and Blair is annoited as the President of the EU, isn't there some provision for there to be a Foreign Minister? I seem to recall that in the event of such an appointment, that the UK was 'expected' to give up its seat on the Security Council of the UN - were the French also giving up their seat as well, or was the UK just being told what to do by the rest of the no good, lazy memebers of the EU.

- Expat, Vancouver, Canada

Thank God that I can say, hand on heart, that I never ever voted for this ogre, or his Republican ZaNuLabour Party!

It's one thing for him to be sneakilly offered such an outrageously undemocratic post, quite another for this sociopathic monster to so presumtiously accept it.

What must America's great new hope, Democrat Obama, really think about this chancer now, and this shockingly grotesque perversion of democracy?
In fact, I wonder if Obama ever really knew about Labour's Red Flag roots ?!!!

And Cherie as First Lady of Europe, too!
Fancy that.

I bet the Kinnock and Prescott and Straw and Benn Dynastic Socialist Family Rulers can't wait either!

- Dave, Cumbria

Errr .... where's our vote on the EU constitution????

- Andy, London

What next? After the Presidency: Beatification. Theres no stopping our Tony

- Knowitrall, London

Heaven forbid that Bliar the war monger ,the madman who sent our soldiers to war on a lie, and has never once been at Bryse Norton to recieve the bodies back of our soldiers, becomes president,he along with Brown has done to our country what Hitler never achieved, the near destruction of everything that was (and hopefully will be again under Cameron)held dear to us as a nation,i'd like to say a few home truths to him,but no doubt he'd run like he always has the coward, but there's one question i'd like to ask him, which is,",How much of the millions you and your greedy grasping wife have earned have you given to any charity concerning our soldiers"?what's the bet not a penny.I detest him and the rest of the looney labour lot.Roll on the election.

- Carol Taylor, romford england

Vichy Labour = no morals, no principles.

- Frank, Home Counties, England.

I doubt that many commentators on this site could name three things that the Lisbon Treaty does; but that won't stop them complaining (!). I am ambivalent about Blair, but if the Treaty goes through and this post has to be filled then it is better for the UK that is Blair than some of the other (more federalist) alternatives. I do wish people would grow up and consider the realities of the World rather than live in a fantasy land.

- Alan, London

I feel physically sick as I watch the UK die. More tears are poured out as we watch dying species of animal, fish and insect. Yet, while our soverignity is being handed over to the EU and our borders are broken down, HE WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE OUR UK PUBLIC SERVANT IS ABOUT TO ENCASH HIS INVESTMENT IN THE EU.

Are you really proud of yourselves as you watch the effects of the EU on our once proud lands? Are you proud of the number of EU babies so over stressing our maternities that many of our own mothers and babies are disadvantaged? When you are old and sad, I hope you will, at least, regret your actions.

If Blair becomes EU President, I'd like to look into his eyes and say, "at least give the UK a good burial!"

- Maria, London

Blair should be in Jail for the damage he's done to this country - and Brown in a Mental Home.

- Pete Kiddle, York, UK

"sorry Tory haters"? What, you want him to ignore you?

I thought you were the personification of unreasoning Tory haters Keith, after all, you do hate for us to have opinions other than your own. (You really should think about what you've actually written before you hit that 'enter' key! I know what you meant, but - semantics, y'know?)

I wonder if they'll keep badgering the Irish if they keep their heads and continue to say 'no'.

- Rogan, Irving

Ted Heath sold us the idea of a united Europe as free trading policy, no mention of the hand over of power to Brussels.
I hold no affinity to many of my European neighbours, especially those in Eastern Europe whose countries I would struggle to find on a map and whose capital cities are unknown to me. Maybe nice places to visit for a short holiday, but not to join hands with them and let them dictate the laws of this country.
All I know is that each member state has their own agenda which is to screw as much cash out of the system for themselves, and sometimes by the use of very questionable methods.
Blair will feel totally at home in this environment as he has had 10 years practice doing just that.
How this man ever became the leader of a party raised to defend the rights of the working people of Britain is one of the great mysteries of all time. His interest is purely the advancement of the Blair bank balance and it's high time he was kicked out of the political arena.

- George, Cambridge UK

The "boys" are up to it again - looking after "their own". This two faced conceited double dealing git should be languishing in jail for war crimes but no - talk about double standards. He is like all the others as shown this week with Polanski. Stop this fiasco now!!!

- Peter, Vienna, Austria

Can,t all the people of the e u vote who should be a president. my vote would go elsewhere.

- John, shepperton

That is why brown would not go to the country, İ told you ages ago, unless call me Dave gets us out of the EU we will have no say in what happens in our own country, it will be run by Bliar and Mandelperson, and Brown will be in there somewhere you watch!! get us out now DAVE next week at the party conference would be a good time to save our nation.

- Steve, England

Tony Blair and the EU deserve each other. Shame we are part of it

- Keith, London

İ told you ages ago that is why mc broon would not go to the country, when will call me Dave wake up? next week all he has to do is OUT OF THE EU, STOP ALL İMERGRATİON NOW tory's in power job done Dave??

- Steve, England

No wonder Britain is the joke of Europe, ,...politicians & businessmen constantly sucking up to the crypto-fascist states of the French & Germans like traitor Quislings,..just to get plum jobs in Brussels gravy train

Life in Britain is the pits under New Labour,..and has been for well over 10 years,...I'm glad I left the sewer hole long ago,..
Just read a piece in the papers today which sums up 100% how mad, lunatic & utterly PC-insane the UK has become,..:--"Violence link to kids who eat sweets",..."Eating sweets every day in childhood increases adult aggression, according to new research" "Study: Eating sweets as a kid linked to violence"

The study, published in the October issue of the British Journal of Psychiatry, is the first to examine the long-term effects of childhood diet on adult violence

My God what a mess the UK has become,..
IN ALL THE YEARS up to when I was 16 OF GORGING MYSELF ON SWEETS CRISPS, GOB-STOPPERS,..OPEL-FRUITS, BLACK-JACKS, ANISEED BALLS, SHERBET,.LUCKY-BAGS,..TOFFEE CAKES ETC ETC,..

I HAVE NEVER MUGGED ANYONE,..NEVER ATTACKED ANYONE WITH A HAMMER, BASEBALL BAT, OR STANLEY-KNIFE,..NOR THROWN BRICKS THROUGH WINDOWS (LIKE JEWISH DEMONSTRATORS & UAF-MEMBERS DO AROUND LONDON) etc,....

WHAT A STINKING ROTTEN SEWER THE UK HAS BECOME!!!!! take the sickening gut wrenching BLAIR WITH THEM

- Skilled Craftsman (Expat Thank God), overseas

Install the idiot as fast as humanly possible; it will guaranatee the tories a landslide victory at the general election.

- Robin, London

You should all go to utube and watch William Hague and his speech on Blair as president and its effects on Labour.

I just hope that this Treaty is not ratified before the next election, the whole thing is undemocratic as it has only been passed by those MPs who now see themselves going onto the EU gravytrain when they are voted out of thye Westminster gravytrain. We the actual people it effects have been bypassed.

- Grumpy As Hell, wimbledon

It was quite clear at the time when he tried to deliver the country into the Eurozone that Tony Blair had the presidency of a federal Europe in this sights. It comes as no surprise therefore that he made a manifesto pledge to hold a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty and then reneged on it.

If the Irish vote "Yes" which they are expected to do then the pressure from the Germans and French on the Czechs and the Poles to ratify the treaty will be acute. They may be able to hold out for six months but we have probably seven months before the election.

I fear that as a result of Blair's mendacity in failing to honour his manifesto pledge the Lisbon Treaty will probably be ratified with all that that entails and his personal ambition will be realised. However the Poles have a history of courageously fighting opressors and let us all hope that it does not desert them now. It could prove their finest hour.

There are likely to be only two winners out of this: Blair and paradoxically UKIP who should benefit from the backlash.

- Martin Fielding, London, England

PLEASE vote "No", Ireland!
Anyway, how can Blair have the time to be EU President? I thought he was sorting out all the problems of the Middle East.
And I don't suppose any sort of vote is in the offing for us, is there? ...No, thought not!

- Croyboy, Croydon

To those of you holding out hope that the Irish will vote "No", I regret to say they will vote "Yes".

I read the Irish Times on-line most days and the sweeteners they've been given about abortion, nuetrality and their commissioner will sway it that way.

The abbyss awaits us!

- Captain Black Of The Mysterons, London, England

Keith, old mate, are you sure you meant to say "Tory-haters"?

- Captain Black Of The Mysterons, London, England

Blair hovering over Cameron? Sounds perfect; bring it on!

- Ben Pearson, Hackney

Just goes to show how important it is that we get out of the EU.Britain ruled by Blair for ten years, get the joy of him yet again.Revolt against the goverment until we the British public get a vote on the Lisbon treaty.

- Dave, london

I'm astonished Sarko is backing him: where's the stalking horse? Someone . . . ? PLEASE . . . ?!!

- Roz, France

What a poor discussion here with frustrated individuals who are not able to step up for their rights in public. I encourage all Brits to say No to the EU and leave the Union. Up to now you guys are are nothing but annoying road-blocks always taking and never giving anything back, yeah a big NOTHING.
So, please ask your next Sorry-Tory Government to make that move. Please do it and become what you already are, the 51st State of the US. Let's move this decaying island across the Atlantic. Free Europe from the Brits!!

- Lars1, Europe

I'll say it again ...

Toff Fony Tony only became a Catholic so that he could have it on his CV.
After his Italian, Spanish and Polish fans are all Catholics.

So given the timing of his hanging / leaving No 10 I'm just totally cynical about his becoming " .. at the right time ..."

I just wish I could've bin a fly on the wall to hear all the hypocrisy during his first confession ...

Urgh ... yuk ... I just hope Angie Markel throws a big spanner in the works ...

miromike

- Miromike, London England

Oh please say it isn't going to be so! This lying self-serving war criminal cannot possibly be elevated into this position. He has no conscience whatsoever or he would be hiding away in shame at what he has done, especially regarding Iraq. Instead he's strutting centre stage, earning £££ for speeches and the latest £40 per SECOND for allowing people to have their photo taken with him - can you believe it? Please please sign George Woodhouse's link to the petition against this.

- Sixtysomething, North Yorkshire

I don't think anybody will take notice of an anti-Blair petition thought up by the Conservatives. Even the French and Germans are talking about excluding David Cameron from the top table discussions if he is elected. They don't think a euro sceptic UK government whose members sit on the fringes can bring anything useful to their discussions. Still, all those europhobes amongst you will be glad of that wont you, even though Cameron told Frazer Nelson in the Spectator article this week that if the Irish vote yes, he will not proceed with a referendum but will retrench and consider his next move. In other words, he will do nothing. More fool those on here who believed him and his promises. It just wont happen.

- Val Daniels, Mijas Costa, Spain

There is no need for debate, its a really simple choice: Do you trust European political elites to look after the best interests of your country, your family, your future?

If yes then vote YES.

If no then vote NO.

I will vote no because, in my experience, everything my people (meaning working class Dubliners)hace achieved has been through graft and activism. Irish elites only give when they have no other choice. Europeans will be the same.

I want a democratic Europe, a Europe designed by the PEOPLE OF EUROPE.

- Brendan Marsh, Dublin, Ireland.

If ever you needed a reason to exit the EU - this is it.

- Tony Gee, London

Bloody disgraceful.Democracy has finally gone down the pan

- T.Nicholson, Bedale, UK

John, Twickenham-"The Lisbon Treaty is an exact replica of the European Constitution rejected by Germany, France and the Netherlands."

John, that's not strictly true. The Lisbon Constitutional Treaty contains more words that the Original Constitutional Treaty. In a cynical attempt to make it appear that some of the original's more contentious clauses have been removed, some paragraphs have been re-written and the rules they introduce dispersed throughout the new document. It is virtually unreadable, and deliberately so, but Lisbon does contain ALL of the elements of the Original and is the same charter for the destruction of EUropean democracy and freedom.
The most dangerous of all the elements of Lisbon is that it is a self-amending treaty.
In other words, once ratified there will be no need for any more EU treaties, and no more referenda on anything to do with the EU. The unelected EU Commission, under Emperor Bliar, will be able to legislate anything they wish without the inconvenience of democratic process or scrutiny.
I would urge everybody, regardless of political persuasion (apart from lost causes like Val Daniels and Keith Price!) to do some serious research into this treaty and be absolutely certain about what it will mean for the future of freedom and democracy in Britain and the rest of EUrope.
It took the Soviet Bloc 70 odd years to rid themselves of socialist tyranny, we must learn from history and resist following in their footsteps.

- Keith Lonsdale, Doncaster

Send him to Afghanistan - he helped with the mess he can clear it up first!

- Nichols, Jakarta

It now appears Cameron has no intention of giving us a vote on the EU constitution.

In which case he will be responsible for:

1. A complete collapse in the notion of democracy
2. The fact that a man we thought we'd got rid of is now more senior in governing this country than Cameron himself and without being elected

If Cameron does this to us it will confirm the conclusion many have already come to. That the multi party system in Britain is a sham. However you vote you get the same. Vote Cameron get Blair!

I think we need a campaign organised along the lines of 'No referendum no Tory vote'.

- Mike Newland, London, England

Message to Keith Price... please enlighten us poor souls. Why does he deserve it?

- Dereck, London, still England but only just

Bush and Blair should be facing trial for war crimes, not lining their pockets with cushy jobs and book deals. Both of them walked away after creating a mess for someone else to clean up and should be hiding from public view not taking up new positions of power. No wonder British people don't like the European Union.

- Graeme, Texas

Blair couldn't be President here, so he now has the chance to be President of the EU - heaven help us! The man is power mad and we don't need him in this position.

As an Irish citizen living in the UK since the 80s, I sincerely hope my countrymen have the good sense to vote "NO". They've already voted no once before and are being forced to vote again, which is undemocratic!

- Karen, London, UK

Congratulations Tony Blair. You deserved it. Just ignore all the sorry Tory hhaters on here. The rest of us do.

- Keith Price, Luton England

I take umbrage to this but I was meant to wasn't I Keith ? I'm not a Tory nor am I a Liebour or LibDem supporter, I am in fact an Englishman who wants some level of decency restored to my country before I die.........

- Andy Woodhead, London, ENGLAND

Best thing that could possibly happen - speaking as a passionate Eurosceptic.

- Kevin T, Beckenham, Kent

The EU cannot be led by a war criminal who is responsible for millions of deaths and partly responsible for the collapse of the world economy. If the EU is so monumentally ignorant on the subject of Blair's character then we'll have to tell them. Blair has no integrity; he hasn't an honest bone in his body; he is a liar and a cheat. He's not even very intelligent. The EU cannot possibly allow this preening poppinjay to become an EU dictator.

- Ellen, Hackney, UK

Let's hope that the Irish people take careful note that the original New Labour halfwit and his band of chancers and charlatans wait in the wings to introduce their second act of destroying what remains of the UK's independence of johnny foreigner.

- Ted, London

Simply refuse to acknowledge his presidency and the EU.

Tony who? EU what?

Nothinng upsets a fascist dictator war criminal more than being ignored.

- Jimbob, Kensington

No, in the name of God, NO !!!! I urge you all to click on George Woodhouse's link and cast your vote NO !!!! Last one out please turn the lights out......

- Andy Woodhead, London, ENGLAND

Those who have been given the opportunity to have their say on this Treaty/Constitution have said NO - this is not democracy, this is the EUSSR. I do not want a federal eu, nor a president, especially not Bliar!

- Wen, Oxfordshire, England

I hope people will now realise that "democracy" is a sham. We live under tyranny, despotism, lies and deceit. Blair has destroyed a thousand years of English liberty; I pray to God the Irish say "no".

- Neil, London, London UK

What happened to Democracy?

Government by the People for the People = Democracy.

Rule by a self perpetuating Political Class = Dictatorship.

Permitting People to put their X against an appointed member of the Political Class, is rule by despots who fear the People.

Democracy starts with the selection of candidates from within the communities they wish to represent.

Democracy may not be perfect, but it is a lot better than we are subjected to at the moment.

- Ian, Reading, England

Congratulations Tony Blair. You deserved it. Just ignore all the sorry Tory hhaters on here. The rest of us do.

- Keith Price, Luton England

The Lisbon Treaty is an exact replica of the European Constitution rejected by Germany, France and the Netherlands. Ireland said 'No' to it, though that didn't stop Parliaments across the EU by passing their people and ratifying regardless.

It matters not what the majority view is regarding the EU, the EU constitution or the Lisbon Treaty. Gordon Brown barely has a mandate to govern the UK as Prime Minister, and aa certainly does not have one to sign away to the EU Constituion (sic Lisbon Treaty)

The people have yet to be given a chance to tell their servants what to do

- John, Twickenham

All I can say is heaven help us and Europe. Blair is the worst possible choice, after all he started Englands decline for Brown to carry on with. All Blair is interested in is Blair and to make as much money as he can for himself and Cherie the greedy He is also responsible for the death of many young British men.

- El Del, Valencia Spain

Please God save us all from President Blair. He has all but destroyed this country.

- Maureen O'Connell, romford england

I feel a little sick............

- Christian Ball, London, UK

What I don't understand is why the Irish are voting again?

They already voted against the treaty and that should be an end to it.

- Mark, St Albans

What a load of rubbish. I can't stand our politics or politicians any more. It's all a very tragic joke these guys are just a bunch of self serving muppets.

- Goggs, London

There's only one position that Blair should hold and that is prisoner for War Crimes.

- John Powell, Hull

please say "NO"IRELAND

- Anon, leicestershire

Ian, London- "The EU president is only a ceremonial chairman type role to set the agenda..."

If you seriously believe that to be true, you are, I'm afraid, dangerously naive. The EU Presidency will be one of supranational power, be in absolutely no doubt about that.

Andy, London "I am generally a supporter of the European Union....."

Why? Why do you support an organisation that has no interest in your aspirations, hopes, fears or welfare?
Why do you support a system of government in which the common man has absolutely no input and no means of holding those in power to account?
Why do you support the abdication of all our sovereign powers to a conglomerate of EUropean countries whose governmental and legal systems are completely incompatible with our own?
Why do you want to surrender your right to self determination?
Why do you support the loss of a thousand years of liberty, freedom and independence?

The EUropean Union is the new Soviet Socialist Republic. Like the old one it will only survive by holding millions in penal servitude, with no rights and no freedom. It is the most pernicious project in EUropean history and the time to stop this oppressive juggernaut is rapidly running out.

- Keith Lonsdale, Doncaster

Of course Ireland are going to say "Yes". They've been given lots of short-term sweeteners by the EU to ensure their ratification goes ahead.

And to appoint Bliar as supreme leader of Europe? Someone, somewhere has a very sick sense of humour. He dragged Britain into two unwinnable wars and oversaw the destruction of the UK economy, whilst failing to deliver any improvement in transport, education, health or the armed forces. His cabinets were filled with corrupt cronies and he divided most of his time in office fighting with his chancellor or hobnobbing with celebrities.

If those are the qualities required of the EU leadership, it's time to disband the whole sorry mess.

Also, David Cameron needs to have the balls to call for a referendum immediately and not put up with the double-talking that Brown peddles in insisting that the new treaty is different to the one that he PLEDGED to put to the people.

The European project has gone too far and it's time for individual countries to take ownership of their own laws and policies. Each country is too different to be governed by a single bureaucracy, especially one headed by Bliar.

- Nobby Clark, Perth, the Scottish one

I dont seem to remember any referendum by Ted Heath when his Conservative government took us into Europe we had to wait for Harold Wilsons' Labour government for one which gave a resounding YES vote!!! - Of course that was before the Tory party was taken over by the extreme right wingers who still control it.

Surely if Ireland vote YES then its time to get both main parties to gaurantee a referendum something that Hague has so far failed to do!!

Anyway what Cameron thinks wont count for much in Europe given that he is now only a member of a sect at the margins of europe wonder what Winston Churchill (another unelected Prime Minister!) would make of celebrating Hitlers birthday!!

As for Tony Blair well you all voted for him and all he truth "He was the best Tory Prime Minister the Conservative Party never had!!". Remember his dad nearly became a Tory MP and so going to war was already in his genes .... Dont get bitter because Labour has made britain better

- Melvyn Windebank, Canvey Island, Essex

Oh No!

- Strongbow Sullivan, Paris,France.

now more than before the irish have an absolutely good reason for voting No in this weeks referendum.

- Peter Kavanagh, dublin, ireland

Roll up, folks! You are about to witness the death of EUropean democracy. How long before Bliar appoints Mandlieson the Mendacious as his ambassador to the peripheral region formerly known as Britain?

A general election looms, and a vote for any of the big 3 will ensure complete sell-out to the EUSSR. The Tory leadership are rabidly EUrophile behind closed doors and would do nothing to stop this traitor from being crowned the new Napoleon.

- Keith Lonsdale, Doncaster

So that was why Mandy was pushed on Brown. When the sun finally goes down on Labour next year - forgive the pun -Mandy will no doubt be given a high profile role by Tony as his sincere thanks for twisting Gordon`s arm. All this must really irk with Gordon. Gordon will be "retired," to his croft with no future in British politics; but TB will have a second coming lording it over all of us. That will mean we will end up with the euro, wholesale immigration and invading Iran in another hopeless war. Hey ho the only good thing is he won`t have his finger on the nuclear button - not yet anyway.

- B Gare, Norfolk Gorleston

I Love Blair to bits, and Bush? He's my Hero!...and I don't care what anyone thinks...

- Lightmmann, London

Democracy? Or was the backhander for refuing us a vote on the Lisbon Treaty??? Utter disgrace, should be with Bush in the Hague

- Gary, Brentwood

I can't believe it. I used to be a Labour supporter until the lies over the war in Iraq. We are still in there and Afghanistan for no bloody reason, oh no I forgot solely because of Tony Blair.

I don't even blame Bush anymore after reading Alastair Campbell's biography. Even Bush was talked into this war by Blair. ...well and Rumsfeld and Cheney, but why Blair?

THIS MAN SHOULD BE IN PRISON!!!

- Bernadette, London

I am generally a supporter of the European Union however I can only hope that Ireland says 'No' Blair as president does not bear thinking about. He is a liar and has only ever looked after his own interests and ego. He will be of no benefit to the people of Europe but will no doubt manage to line his own pockets further with the 'fruits' of the title of President!

The alternative is for the treaty to be ratified and for someone to ensure that Blair faces a war crimes tribunal asap - can't imagine the EU wanting someone who is being investigated for war crimes heading up the organisation!

I very much doubt that Tony Blair will become European President within a few weeks,t.

After all, he must be pretty busy with his current job as Middle East peace envoy, and it will probably take him until Christmas to bring the Palestinians and Israelis together - by New Year's Eve he may have persuaded the Iranians to give up their nuclear ambitions and the Iraqis to stop fighting each other and our boys. Perhaps on 1 January 2010 he might be able to find some space in his diary for reversing climate change and making poverty history.

- C. Nichol, London

I find it amusing that many an American reader (such as is "Frank, Home Counties, England" whose use of "Gee" betrays him) pour scorn on Europe and European Union.

Blair's imminent election is good news for all the citizens of the European Union inspite of the chorus of usual whingers and scaremongers.

- Compayee, London

This can not be allowed to happen. At best this man proved to be naive in following the USA into war, at worst he is a warmonger and should be charged as such.Europe has experienced a period of relative peace for several decades, the last thing we need is a man such as this. Not content with riding the grvy train for the past few years, he wants the whole network.

- Mick, Mancheser.UK

I have always been a proud supporter of the EU and would have hoped the UK join it fully in a heart beat.

But Blair as president!!? He destroyed the UK......
This makes me think being UK PM was all just a plan to increase his status for the job he really wanted.

I hope Ireland votes no!

- Phill, worksop

1 more anti-christian, anti-jewish and anti-european person bought by arabs to head EU,

God save us from such so called leaders...
look what has happen to UK under the labour party leaders like tony blair, more asylum seekers, more terrorists, more problems for honest citizens and legal immigrants.

- Br, LONDON. UK

Hang on hang on! The Poles have not yet ratified and the Czech Constitional Court have just been asked again to look at the validity of Lisbon on their Constitution.
Anyway the Irish may still vote no.

- Jack Cade, Heathfield

Please Ireland, save us all from the Bliar (or at least delay it for a while). Welcome to the "People's Democratic Republic" of Europe. Democracy, what's that?

- Luke, England

What deals got him there? The man is a disgrace to his country. So many lies emergred from his tenure at the top in Britain, one shudders at the prospect of him presiding over Europe.

- Geoffrey, London

When do the people of the UK get the referendum on the European constitution that TB promised us.

And will TB quit his new job when we all say no?

Joe

- Joe, Kiev, Ukraine

Democracy? WHERE?

The UK is being run by a gaggle of unelected cronies of Gormless Brown and the sooner they are all relegated to the rubbish tip the better it will be.

As for Bliar - oh! yes! he needs the money to fund his FOUR homes and to stash further untold millions of pounds in offshore accounts.

- Reuben Camara, Morecambe Compound, EUSSR

'The former prime minister's candidacy for the new post will be rushed through as quickly as possible if Ireland votes "Yes" in its referendum on the Lisbon Treaty on Friday.'

. . . Why does this need to be "rushed through" other than perhaps that people will otherwise have a chance to reconsider the devastaion that Blair's leadership of Britain brought to our once proud Nation? Do EU citizens really want to "enjoy" a similar experience? And are they prepared to send their sons to war?

I strongly urge our Irish cousins to to vote AGAINST the Lisbon Treaty if for no other reason than to prevent Tony Blair from becoming EU President.

- Fraser, Telford Park

Turn your country into a province of a new country, then become President of the new country. Nice trick if you can get away with it, and it seems Blair has. A slight matter of the British people not having any say in their country being turned into a province, but he and the other Eurocrats can't give the lowly peons a say in a fundamental change to their system of government. It must feel great being part of an elite group with power to change others' nationality without giving them any say. Democracy in the U.K. and Europe in general is a total farce.

- Phil Jones, London UK

Just how sleazy can politics get - this is the man that lied about Iraq and looked the other way while Israel massacred the lebanese civilians. Should be on trial, not at the head of Europe with his snout in tthe trough.

- Gmb, Bristol UK

Oh great,

Not content with ruining Britain, Blair wants to go on and spread his awful politics across Europe!

God help us all!

- Chris Mason, Sussex

That's going to really help labour's chance of re-election!!

- Chris, Brighton, England.

The EU president is only a ceremonial chairman type role to set the agenda, but Tony Blair will be pouncing around the world stage as if he is an elected head of an executive. The only European institution he should be present at is the Hague war crimes tribunal. If we are going to have a Brit it’s a pity its not Paddy Ashdown (or anyone but Blair come to think of it).

- Ian, London

I hope everyone has voted in the petition at http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/stopblair/signatures.html

It is a vain hope that democracy will count for anything in this appointment - as in most things to do with the EU. But I still think it is worth getting as many people as possible to express their feelings about this waste of space fulfilling his ambition. 33300 votes against so far - keep them coming please!

- George Woodhouse, Stalham, Norfolk

Given Blair's taste for war, we'll all probably be serving on the Russian Front within months of his appointment.

- Maximum Bob, London UK

Presumably he bought his presidency will all of the UK Gold that he sold for overpriced Euro's.

If he had not sold that gold we would not be in the mess that we are in now - unless the current government had found yet another way to waste it

Blair should be on trial for wrecking the economy nor being given yet another meal ticket - a man of gloss and no substance and certainly should not be put in charge of anything without a meaningful election !

- James, City of London

It beggars belief.

- Paul, London

He always wanted to be a president here in UK rather than a PM such was his belief in his US masters.Having been Bushes puppy dog he must have liked the title even more. Pity help us all if he is elected after the mess he has caused in UK before he quit.

- Mike, London England and once GREAT Britain

President of the European Union? Gee, must have missed that election. Oh yes the Communists are in charge, no vote on the EU Constitution, an unelected unaccountable PM, unelected unaccountable Lords and Ladies in the cabinet.

I wonder if we will be allowed a vote in the UK general election, or will Harpy Harman or some other mad socialist bring in legislation to ban us from voting?

Vote right, vote right.

- Frank, Home Counties, England.

Should be on trial at the Haugue. This is an utter disgrace. Democracy? Who voted for this then. Another prime example of the EU elite weeing all over us peasants while they rifle through our pockets.
