David Miliband: Tories turn blind eye to EU ‘Nazi’ friends

Paul Waugh, Deputy Political Editor
01.10.09

David Miliband accused the Tories of condoning Nazism today as he attacked David Cameron's new European partners.

The Foreign Secretary seized on the Conservatives' alliance with the Latvian Fatherland and Freedom Party.

He claimed Michael Kaminski, one of the party's MEPs — who leads the Tories' new grouping in the European Parliament — had an “anti-semitic, neo-Nazi past”.

Mr Miliband also condemned Tory chairman Eric Pickles for trying to justify the Fatherland and Freedom Party's annual celebration of dead soldiers in the Latvian SS legion.

Mr Pickles said last week they were honouring all Latvian Second World War dead.

“It makes me sick. And you know what makes me sicker? No one in the Tories batted an eyelid,” Mr Miliband said.

"Is it still a "slur" if it's true?

The key word here is "IF"

Or, to be more precise, one would have to say "if only that would be true"

Frankly, I used to believe that that kind of rabid Red gibberish is typical only of the former/current Soviet enthusiasts and KGB folks.

I never expected this to come from Foreign Secretary of Great Britain.

The word "shocked" possibly describes my reaction best, when I heard of it.

Do people actually read and absorb comments or do they have a preprepared response they just type in .I am a Tory and am deeply concerned about Cameron's dubious Euro contacts; some really unpleasant contacts. For fellow Conservatives to dismiss these facts with silly comments reduces us a serious government in waiting. Not funny or clever.

As opposed to Labour who conveniently turn a blind eye to human rights abuses perpetrated by their close friends in Russia and China?

- Frank, Home Counties, England.

Like it or not, these guys have votes in the EU halls of power. They are not a part of the broad left conspiracy to snuff out individual state nationalism under mostly socialist leaning nations across Europe. I don't care if they mourn the loss of their war dead. What I care about is what these people do and say NOW. From what I can make out, their only really heinous crime seems to be that they are not socialists.

Are they strutting around in militaristic uniforms and advocating the annihilation of this or that political/religious/ethnic group? That's what the finger pointers are suggesting by saying they are Nazi sympathisers. Good grief, according to the hard left in the UK, anyone to the right of their own beliefs is either an out an out Nazi or a sympathiser at best!

(Hint, opposition to radicals that may be found in these listed groups is not a de facto demand for their blood!)

Labour are ramping up the rhetoric in preparation for what promises to be one of the nastiest pre-election smear campaigns on record. With nothing else to offer, all they can hope to do is bring the opposition down to their own level. Plenty of fools out there dumb enough to buy into it though, unfortunately.

It is high time Milibanana got a life.

He will definitely need to find another job after the general election.

Calling yourselves ‘the Fatherland and Freedom Party’ is hardly the best way to avoid pro-Nazi slurs.

- Ian, London

May I suggest to some of the readers and comment makers to actually find out about some of these people the Tories are now grouping with before trying to condemn Milliband. I am no fan of his but he is totally correct about these characters.

This from a schoolboy who's father was a rich communist!

Is it still a "slur" if it's true?

- Nolan, Londonist

How desperate can you get?

- Jules_London, london

My dear Mr Miliband, it is simply Newton's Third law of motion.

"To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction."

The further to the Left you jump, the further to the right we will jump.

- Frank, Home Counties, England.

THE EU IS NOTHING MORE THAN A GLORIFIED 'Nazi' PARTY.

- Vince, London, West London

Milliband may be a freaky little man with strange hair, but he has hit the nail on the head with this one. The Tories' euro grouping are a very unpleasant bunch of former (and current) nazis! I can't imagine what David Cameron thought he was doing.

- Nolan, Londonist

The ultimate "left" slur; "Nazi".
