'Special treatment' for Cameron's street

David Cameron's London street is at the centre of a favouritism row after neighbours accused the council of giving it a "VIP" makeover.

Residents claim the street in north Kensington has been "jet washed" and re-tarmaced while neighbouring roads have been left untouched.

Opposition councillors today accused the Conservative-led Kensington and Chelsea Council of "cosying up" to the Tory leader and suggested the street was polished to look good on TV.

Chairman of Kensington and Chelsea Labour group Pat Mason said the special treatment was unfair.

The councillor said: "I have no idea why they are doing this now. Either the Pope is about to pay him a visit or of course they are trying to further ingratiate themselves with the future prime minister of this country. That is the obvious conclusion you have to draw."

The road was fitted out with new Yorkstone paving slabs around 18 months ago as part of a multi-million-pound project being rolled out across the borough.

But unlike other streets, it was recently re-tarmaced and was also given a jet wash to buff the pavement. The nearest other street to have been jet washed is more than a mile away.

Mr Mason said: "It is not fair on other ratepayers and council tax payers paying for this and not getting a similar service themselves. It does seem like he is getting preferential treatment."

Jackie Offenbach, who lives nearby, said: "It looks amazing... they're clearly trying to cosy up to him."

Kensington and Chelsea Council insisted it had not singled out the Tory leader's street for special consideration, claiming the work was carried out because of lime trees leaving residue on the pavement.

David Cameron is just demonstrating how the rest of England will be cleaned up when everybody on any form of social security, apart from the severely disabled, will be put to work to gain their benefit by contributing to the nations wealth and pride.

Well done David Cameron for showing the way forward to get England back on its feet again!
