Jermain Defoe in court on speeding charge

5 Oct 2009

Premier League footballer Jermain Defoe is to appear in court today to face charges relating to an alleged speeding offence.

The England and Tottenham Hotspur striker has been charged with exceeding a 30mph speed limit and failing to provide his identity in Portsmouth, Hants, on May 8, 2008.

The 26-year-old is being represented by Nick Freeman, known as "Mr Loophole", who has become famous for helping celebrities including Jeremy Clarkson avoid driving convictions.

Defoe, whose half-brother Jade Defoe, 26, died from head injuries four days after being attacked in an east London street in April, is due to attend the hearing at Portsmouth Magistrates Court at 2pm.
