Canada tour for Prince Charles and Camilla

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall will visit Canada for an official trip next month, Canadian officials said today.

Charles and Camilla will tour 12 cities and communities across the Commonwealth country over 11 days.

The confirmation of the visit comes after Canada announced earlier this year that the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will travel to the country in 2010.

The two high-profile tours by the Monarch, who is Canada's head of state, and the Prince, her eventual successor, are likely to be efforts to renew and strengthen ties between Britain and the Commonwealth nation.

Speaking about Charles and Camilla's trip, Canada's prime minister Stephen Harper said: "The visit by their royal highnesses is a great honour for Canadians."

He added: "It will allow all of us, particularly young people, an opportunity to learn more about the heritage and traditions of which we are all proud."

Recent tours by the royal couple to South America and the Far East have seen the issues of climate change and the environment play a major role.

But it is likely Canadian themes will be an important part of the trip which will take in four provinces - Newfoundland and Labrador, Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia - from November 2 to 12.

Charles has visited the country numerous times since the 1970s with his last tour held in 2001. Camilla is making her first official visit to the nation.

I think they are lacklustre royalty and would be surprised if this was a big event in Canada.
