New Zealand judge jails former MP for corruption

A former New Zealand Cabinet minister was jailed for six years today for bribery, corruption and attempting to pervert the course of justice - the country's first MP to be locked up for serious breaches of the law.

Taito Phillip Field, 57, was the first New Zealander of Pacific Islands descent elected to Parliament and appointed to the Cabinet. The 11 charges related to Field's use of Thai nationals to carry out mainly unpaid work on seven of his properties in New Zealand and Samoa in return for immigration assistance between 2002 and 2005. Wellington High Court judge Rodney Hansen said Field's conduct was "intolerable".
