Polanski bail plea refused

Kiran Randhawa

Roman Polanski's request to be released from prison after being detained on sex abuse charges was denied by the Swiss authorities today.

The Oscar-winning director, 76, arrested by police in Zurich on a 1978 warrant for having sex with a 13-year-old girl, sought bail pending his possible extradition to America. Polanski has lived in France since fleeing the US in 1978, a year after pleading guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with teenager Samantha Geimer.

He now faces weeks in a prison cell while France and Poland fight his extradition.
