Blair's property portfolio grows as Nicky gets 'lads' pad'

Tony and Cherie Blair have bought a sixth home bringing the total worth of their property portfolio to £11.94 million, it was revealed today.

Their latest addition to their empire is a £1.13 million town house in a quiet mews in an upmarket area of London.

The three-storey house has four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a sun terrace a state-of-the-art kitchen, an open plan living room and a garage.

It is situated in a quiet cul-de-sac in central London near numerous bars, restaurants and pubs.

The latest purchase has been described as “the ultimate lads' pad” and is understood to have been bought by Cherie, 54, for the Blair's second son Nicky.

The 23-year-old, who graduated from Oxford University two years ago, shares the house with friends. All of them pay rent to live there.

Land Registry documents show mother and son listed as the owners, and that the property was bought last month for £1.13 million with no mortgage.

The other properties owned by the Blairs include a seven-bedroom, Grade I-listed country pile in Wotton Underwood, near Aylesbury, formerly owned by the actor Sir John Gielgud, which they bought for £5.75million.

They also own a five-storey, Grade II-listed mansion in Connaught Square, central London, worth £3.7million, to which they added a £800,000 neighbouring mews house to get extra space.

And in 2002 Cherie they used conman Foster to help buy two flats in the city for £262,500 each - although one has since been sold - one of which was for her eldest son Euan who was at university there.

The couple also still own the four-bedroom constituency home in County Durham, although this property is now for sale.

They have amassed such an expansive property portfolio that some commentators have questioned whether they can afford the mortgage repayments.

The latest mews house was sold to a property developer a year ago and extensively refurbished.

I don't know about you guys but £1.3 million cash from a part-time barrister seems a lotta bread to me. I'm sure if I flashed that much porky would come a sniffin.

- Steve, Brentford

I Suppose he's only following the well worn trend of retired Presidents and PM's,who go on the "Gravy Train" of Luncheon Speeches and Book writing, and any other lucrative activity that comes there way.Lets face it,there all at it.Is it Greed?,well it can't be far off it.

- John Reid, Manchester,UK

The word chumps comes to mind whenever I see them.

- Jon, london

Well I suppose the money he has "earned" is only fair compensation for being married to that aweful woman.

- Dannyp, Egham

It seems unusually difficult for you Brits to realize that Tony and Cherie Blair are among the greatest hypocrites of their age. I used to go on CND marches with Tony Blair and Jack Straw (and Michel Foot) and let me tell you I was suapicious of the Blair and the Straw even then! Utterly unsurprising. They just wanted to be rich, and they made it.

- Christopher, Miami Florida USA

All this greed and grasping in one lifetime.

Next con being religious conversion but neither of these so called clever people seem to have realised they will leave this world with the same as everyone else, no exceptions ever.

They've conned themselves for once, they will depart with nothing.

- Ken.H, Harrow. UK

Seems he can well afford the cost of protection for his main home that we are paying for, regardless of where in the World he is making money.
The pair of them are sickening. Ideal as EU president for him.

- Michael, London, UK

Hey, Blair was just over here to give a speech and charged people $300.00 can. dollars to have there picture taken with him.And guess what ? They sold out. See we have suckers over here too. A fool and his money etc. etc.

- Howard, Nanaimo BC Canada

Time to up the taxes on second homes

- David Smith, Croydon

Surely you didn't expect Mummy's little darling to have to pay for his own house. He wasn't even clever enough to find his own student accommodation or his own job.

- Zoe Hollinger, Brentford, UK

AS a UK national, I have mixed feelings about TB and will never forgive him for joining with GWH in what I call the rape of Iraq. I hope he and BUSH + AZNAR + HOWARD are hauled before an international tribunal one day to answer for their crime He must never be allowed to become the first EU President. His lust for money also rankles with me. He never was a SINCERE Labour man deep down, so his expensive property acquisitions merely reflect a return to his capitalist tory roots!

- Claudebouloux, MUS (France)

Just like a banker. Does a bad job and walks away with millions....

- Ab, London

Nasty pair of champagne socialists! Pay for your own security Cherie!

- Wen, Oxfordshire, England

And they claim to be Christians?

- Volpone, London, London

Socialism 2009.

E Nuff London - You forgot the Kinnocks. Another good socialist couple.

Not so much a case of what can I do for my country - what can I get out of it and the European Union.

The Labour hierachy make the tory grandees look like paupers. Pity they are not leaving the country`s finances in the same healthy state as their bank balances and property portfolios.

Does make you wonder sometimes how these mediocre politicians have got so rich in the past decade. What a cynical lot we are.

- B Gare, Norfolk Gorleston

Tony Bliar has never been a socialist. He joined the Labour party on the basis that 'a one-eyed man is king in the land of the blind'! He knew he could not cut the mustard in the Tory party - his modest background will not allow him to fulfil his lofty ambitions where Eton/Harrow and Cambridge/Oxford were a necessary pre-requisite, so he joined the Labour party to fulfil the same ambitions. This guy is infinitely dangerous - please do not allow him near the EU as president. As for his greedy wife who keeps using her poor background as an excuse for sheer covetousness and pure greed - don't even get me started on her!

- Liz, London

I think they brought the most recent property as a HOME not an Investment.

I bet thay are on tracker rates too so repayments must have fallen by 80% - Good on them, they know property is always money well spent.

- Ancient Wisdom, London, England

A massive fortune and the Presidency of the new country that he shoved down Brits' throats. Quite a guy!! He's leaving behind the new island province he helped create, and headed to Brussels and the leadership of a country of 400million. Good ole Blair always knew which side his bread was buttered!! Will Cherie be the First Lady of the new country, and will their house in Brussels be white? The E.U. model has followed the U.S. model in every other way!

- Phil Jones, London UK

I feel sick...

- Lucia, London UK

how is the Police Protection relevant to this discussion?
Presuming there has been a risk assessment undertaken by the Police and there is considered to be a genuine need, he should get it. Or are we means testing Police services now?
Ex Presidents in the US get it for life...

- Martin_Clerkenwell, london

Wonder when the boys are on leave so they can enjoy the pad? ooh silly me its just our boys and girls that go to war!!!!!!

- Steve, England

And yet millions are unemployed and the country is in tatters, must be nice feeding in the trough!

- Dirk Diggler, Soho, London

Well said Abdul and Martin, Blair is as socialist as Thatcher was! Few of his policies, apart from the minimum wage, benefited the ordinary man. But in any case, since when can't a socialist be rich? Many avowed capitalists enjoy the services of the NHS and all enjoy the protection of the publicly funded police and armed services. Does that make them hypocrites? I think not.

- Veritas Noire, Purley

These are only the homes he has in ENGLAND - I would like to see the full list !

- Jenny, London - The Centre of the Thinking Peoples Universe

Hopefully one day when Blair is indicted for Treason and corruption, all his properties and assets will be seized and impoundes as the 'proceeds of crime'.

- David Moon, East Sussex, UK

CW- Excellent point re the inheritance tax. I wonder how much of the mortgage he stumps up.

- Mpr, London

Don't we taxpayers feel glad to be able to help the Blairs add to their property empire? The £1.3 million (without mortgage!!) paid for the mews house might not have been available if they had had to use the money to pay for their £1m police protection for their empty Connaught Square house.

- Js, London

Since when was Blair a Socialist, far from it,Nu Labour are as much a Party of Capitalism, as the Torys, its Capitalist policies that have got Britain into this mess,in the meantime as usual, the ordinary worker will pay for the crisis in Capitalism,as the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer.

- Abdul Nagech, London

Socialism at it's very best.

- Frank, Home Counties, England.

His next home will be in Brussels for his next great challenge. Amazing, how politicians manipulate their subjects.

- Robert Maxwell, Munich, Germany

Blair, together with all the rest of his Nu Labour pals including Mandelson, Brown, Alastair Campbell, Harman, Prescott and Darling all know how to accumulate wealth through property purchases don't they ?
I hope they don't reign over us much longer.

- E.Nuff, London

The Blairs - Good Socialist stock !

- H, London, UK

At a time when there is a serious housing shortage in London I question the morality of Mr and Mrs Bliar in accumulating a real estate portfolio of this size.

- Simon Ellis, London

Blair is rich....what's the story?

he has never claimed to be a socialist...

- Martin_Clerkenwell, london

So why does the inept Brown keep going on about the 'privileged' tories? There are just as many privileged labourites these days - Blair a prime example. The issue, however, is that most tories didn't get rich off the proceeds of public office (funded by the tax payer) whereas the cockroach Blair did!

- Margy, LOndon

Right from 1997 Mr & Mrs Blair have looked after themselves and with Mr Brown's help they "robbed" us to make sure they had a more than comfortable future. The force of 646 MP's have also made sure they were going to be ok both on the cash front and property. Most sickening was the "Manifesto Promise" on the Lisbon Treaty but a few quid in the back pocket took care of our "democracy" in one fell swoop. So in future dont believe the Manifesto unless they come clean about building their property portfolio.
God help us if the Blairs are declared "King & Queen" of the EU. Some one give us the vote so we can "save lots of money" after all the prople who make the decisions were not "voted in". Get us out of the EU and leave the Blairs with their pile of bricks and morter.

- Jock, canterbury kent

Do they have mews houses in Iraq?

- Ms Jeanette Eccles, London

He's obviously building up his property portfolio in these hard times after watching 'Homes under the hammer' on his morning off before becoming Emperor of Europe.

- Squiz, Islington

Blair’s New Labour has left this country in such huge dept it will take generations to pay back. They have slowly destroyed our civil liberties and taken us into an illegal war which has killed millions, whilst send our troops out with the correct equipment. Schools, hospitals, transport, the postal service, children's services etc are in a terrible state. People are losing there jobs or have their pay is frozen. So what happens to the man responsible for all this? He builds up his property portfolio whilst laughing in our faces. Do you what this man running Europe?

- Paul B, London

Do they have Mews houses in Iraq ??

- Ms Jeanette Eccles, London

Good luck to them,Capitalism at work,in a Capitalist Britain.

- Raymond Snaresbrook, Kensington

"Land Registry documents show mother and son listed as the owners"
Surely this isn't an attempt by the Blairs to circumnavigate inheritance tax?

- Cw, London

Good old socialists.

- Mpr, London

And yet they still claim expenses for their "private security"? Nice one future President Blair, I'm ironing my brown shirt in order to be one of your blindly obedient followers.

- Bob, Cheam

By buying into the currently overvalued property market, Blair shews he is as ill-advised in spending his own money as he was in spending ours.

- Richard, london england
