Praying parents jailed for allowing girl to die

Ed Harris
7 Oct 2009

A couple who prayed rather than seek medical care for their dying daughter have been jailed.

Dale and Leilani Neumann, of Weston, Wisconsin, were given six months and probation for the second degree homicide of 11-year-old Madeline, youngest of their four children.

Madeline died last year of an undiagnosed but treatable form of diabetes. Prosecutors said the couple recklessly killed her by ignoring her severe illness as she became too weak to speak, eat, drink or walk.

During the sentencing hearing, Dale Neumann, 47, read from the Bible and told the court he loved his daughter.

The judge at the Marathon, Wisconsin court ordered the couple to serve one month in jail each year for six years. He said they were very good people but reckless.
