TV maker creates 500 jobs in Britain

7 Oct 2009

Taiwanese television manufacturer Kenmark is to open a factory in the UK, creating 500 new jobs, it was announced today.

The electronics giant said it will open its European manufacturing and distribution hub in Corby, Northamptonshire, representing the biggest single new investment in the UK from Taiwan.

The jobs will be created over three years.

Business Minister Pat McFadden said: "This investment is good news for the East Midlands and the UK. The UK is not only the sixth biggest manufacturing nation in the world but also a major European market of over 60 million people. I wish Kenmark every success in doing business here."

UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), the government's international business development organisation, worked with the East Midlands Development Agency to discuss the benefits of locating in the UK with the company, saying that Northamptonshire was chosen as it offered a strong workforce and excellent transport links.

Kenmark chairman James Hwang, who made the announcement alongside UKTI chief executive Sir Andrew Cahn in Taipei today, said: "The location is ideal and provides Kenmark with a base from which to continue our growth while providing the local community with diverse and secure employment opportunities."

Sir Andrew Cahn said: "This investment is a great boost for the region and is very welcome. Kenmark recognises that the UK is the best place to establish a European operation. We have a great business culture and we are the springboard from which companies can move into markets around the world."

Bryan Jackson, chairman of East Midlands Development Agency, added: "I'm delighted that Kenmark has chosen Corby and at the job prospects that this will bring for the local population, particularly at this difficult time for the economy. This is proof that manufacturing is alive and kicking in the UK."

Business Minister Pat McFadden spouted that the UK "is the sixth biggest manufacturing nation in the world".

Really?

That does not say much for the other countries.
