Gordon Ramsay was today forced to scrap a £5,000 chef scholarship bearing his name.

The Gordon Ramsay Scholar Award, which is open to 18- to 25-year-olds and was last year funded by Gordon's Gin, "is being rested", his spokeswoman told Caterer magazine.

The prize included the chance to work in Ramsay's restaurants in London, Paris and New York. Previous victors have established themselves in head chef roles including 2004 scholar Marcus Eaves, who is now at L'Autre Pied in Marylebone.

Gordon Ramsay Holdings' profits fell by 87 per cent last year.
