Gunned down: Cem Duzgun was killed at a social club by a man with an Uzi-style sub-machinegun

Shop worker shot dead was 'random' gang victim

A man shot dead in a suspected gangland turf war may have been targeted at random in a revenge killing, it emerged today.

Cem Duzgun, 21, died after a gunman armed with an Uzi-style sub-machinegun opened fire on a handful of people at a social club.

The group had been watching the Manchester City versus Aston Villa match on Monday at Clapton FC - a Turkish social and sports club.

The killing of Mr Duzgun, from Clerkenwell, came three days after gangster Oktay Erbasli, 23, was shot at the wheel of his Range Rover in Tottenham in front of a woman and her five-year-old son.

Police fear Mr Duzgun's killing was revenge for the earlier murder and the latest round in an escalating war between rival gangs. Detectives are trying to establish if shop worker Mr Duzgun was deliberately targeted or just the victim of a random shooting.

His family have told the Standard that he was not involved in gangs or drugs but was in the wrong place at the wrong time. They say Mr Duzgun had gone to the social club to meet friends after work.

Two men approached the club in Upper Clapton Road at about 10.45pm before one entered and fired shots. Both fled on foot.

Police are examining a turf war between two Turkish gangs - the Bombacilar and the Tottenham Boys. Mr Erbasli is suspected of being in the Tottenham Boys.

Any of us could have been in "the wrong place at the wrong time". What a tragedy. My sympathies are with the friends and family of Cem Duzgun.
