Boris to axe Met's £2m-a-year car perks

Senior police officers face being stripped of their chauffeur-driven cars under a City Hall economy drive.

A total of 41 high-ranking officers are entitled to a car, including Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson, but at Mayor's question time today, Boris Johnson said the perk would be phased out - though it could take time.

"I can't snap my finger and make these cars disappear in one fell swoop," said Mr Johnson.

Dee Doocey, the Liberal Democrat London Assembly policing spokeswoman, said: "This perk is costing taxpayers nearly £2million a year, which would pay for an extra 30 police officers."

Mr Johnson today also said he had "no plans" to make motorists pay as they drive - despite the proposals in his transport strategy. The Mayor said the proposals were there for a future mayor.
