The BNP will be forced to admit black and Asian members after a legal victory for the Government's Equality and Human Rights Commission which will end the party's “white only” policy.
In a court order issued today, the party agreed to amend its constitution to ensure that its membership rules no longer discriminate on grounds of race, religion or any other “protected characteristic” specified under equality legislation.
The commitment means the party, which previously allowed only “indigenous Caucasians” and those from connected ethnic groups to become members, will now be required to admit any person who wishes to join its ranks. The policy change was announced today at the Central London county court after the BNP decided to admit defeat in a legal battle with the Equality and Human Rights Commission over its membership rules.
The fight began earlier this year when the commission issued proceedings against the party, accusing it of breaching the Race Relations Act. Today Robin Allen QC, counsel for the commission, said party leader Nick Griffin had agreed to present his members with a revised constitution at its general meeting next month.
He added that the party had agreed not to accept any further members until the updated constitution was in place and that the new rules must be in place within three months at the latest.
John Wadham, of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, said: “Political parties, like any other organisation, are obliged to respect the law and not discriminate.
“It is unfortunate the BNP spent several months before conceding and dealing properly with our legal requirements. We will be monitoring the BNP's compliance with this court order.”
He added: “All political parties must obey the law, our job is to ensure that everyone obeys the law. Whether people want to join the BNP or not is a matter for them, it's their freedom to do so.”
He said if the party's membership rejected a reformed constitution the commission would return to court.
Richard Barnbrook, the BNP's representative on the London Assembly, said he believed party members would vote for a reformed constitution.
Mr Griffin has 10 days to submit a signed undertaking to the court confirming the proposed changes.

It is interesting reading the above comments.
Living in Leicester, i am concerned that by next year i will become an ethnic minority. I am a Brtish, middle aged, white, working class women. Leicester is predicted to become the first City in Europe where the white population will become the minority.
Will i get the same opportunities that the 'ethnic' groups get when i become the minority? Somehow i don't think so. If i was to join a 'white only' group, i'd still be accused of being racist.
In my eyes, the BNP are far to extreme, but there's no avoiding the fact that they are growing in numbers. I predict that there will be more political parties forming, that will have the same views but will try to protect the British people.

Good, now maybe this odious 'Political Party' will become more democratic, and not just democracy for those that happen to have a white skin...but democracy for ALL BRITISH CITIZENS regardless of colour.
- Wayne, Liverpool
Ethnic groups exist only because their members are in the minority. Thats the point. MINORITY. Its not reasonable to say "well I can't have a whites only club" because whites are not a minority, white people benefit from the very fact of their whiteness so there is no need for it.
- Lisa, London
I think all whites should now join the numerous black organizations out there....

are you suggesting that to discriminate against non whites is free speech and the British way?

So pretty much what Labour have done then?

This means the beginning of the end of the BNP.

If the BNP ever become a significant political force, this country can expect a massive decline in inward investment - not just from Indian, Chinese and the Arab state's national funds but from European and American corporations too.
If you think we are in difficult economic times now, just wait until that happens. This country will become a pariah and far from taking us out of the EU, we will be literally begging to be allowed into the Eurozone because the Pound Sterling will be worthless. Every problem we face now would be magnified a hundred-fold.
Do you think Magna would have bought Vauxhall if it was located in the middle of a fascist state?
Until BNP supporters start to see the light, they will be ridiculed and challenged on all sides because it's a case of simple economic survival. Not one expert on economic policy backs the BNP's ideas - why do you think that is; because the whole world is picking on white people?
To ignore the reality of life in 2009 is hopelessly stupid. The falseness of the BNP's message is written everywhere, if you have eyes to see - just look at that sweating wreck of a "leader". Wake up and stop railing against the modern world. You're embarassing the country you profess to love so much.
- Ganesh, London, England
I guess the BNP will employ the same membership criteria as most BME self interest groups.
You can join them but you cannot vote or have a say in their affairs.
Its a broad brush. The others will have to comply. Or else!
- Andyj, wigan, UK
Alan from Llandrindod Wells,is spot on.
Some of the opinions of my black and asian friends and workmates, would get Nick Griffin thrown in the Tower.
When my mate,Ash,a British citizen of Indian origin voiced an outrageous sentiment about another ethnic group,I said,"you can't say that".He replied,"You can't say that, but I can!".
I know young black, mixed race and asian people, who complain that they cannot get council housing, but new arrivals can.
An eatern european lad I know, got here in '97 and was given a nice flat in Brixton.Good luck to him,but can you blame anyone for getting the hump?

If anyone can now join does that mean police and armed forces can aswell ?

if every ethnic minority of whatever class, colour, or creed signs up to the bnp and goes tgo their meetings then in one foul swoop the bnp raison'd'etra is null and void and they quickly descend into absurd farce and history.
roll on the great debacle.

If anyone can now join does that mean police and armed forces can as well?

Who cares, the BNP are vile filth and anybody who defends them, aplogises for them is also a vile and subhuman piece of offal.
Don't you get it? if the BNP gained power they would remove all democratic rights for everyone, except their fanatical rascist thugs, a la the SS and gestapo.
Get real.

- Mg, London "How convenient that they agree to change their policy just before their appearance on Question Time"
If you read the 1st paragraph - "The BNP will be forced to admit black and Asian members after a legal victory for the Government's Equality and Human Rights Commission". The article states they were forced to comply with a court order.
- Dom, london
If you are white then why are you even bothered whether they are racist or who gets allowed in or what? Don't get involved, save yourself the hassle!
- Sarah Bradshaw, Enfield, Middx
"The police federation is there to represent ALL officers regardless of race creed etc so why not let them get on with it"
Surely the very existence of support groups for minorities within the force suggests that the main Police Federation is NOT "getting on with it"? Otherwise, why go to the trouble and expense of setting them up?
- Michael, London
I'm sure the black and Asian population will be celebrating tonight that they are at last able to join the BNP. To think there are people who see the EHRC as a pointless quango ripe for closing down.
- Kevin T, Beckenham, Kent
I have a strange feeling that Nick Griffin has been, perhaps inadvertantly, handed the means to re-engineer his organisation to a new level of influence.
John Wadham may live to regret.
Do not assume that all opponents of more immigration and our ludicrous membership of the corrupt,anti-democratic E.U.are thick and white.

The Gloucestershire BPA aren't acting illegally. Important distinction.
- Stan The Van, London
What ever next - The DUP in Northern Ireland actively recruiting Catholics into its ranks!!!
- Azmat, Chelmsford
Yawn, that old chestnut. Gloucestershire BPA is part of the National Black Police Association who state categorically that "The NBPA is open to all in policing on application, there is no bar to membership based on colour." Try again.
Here's a clue: It is illegal to discriminate against anyone on grounds of race, colour, nationality or ethnic origins or on grounds of their religion or philosophical beliefs. It's the law.
- Nolan, Londonist
Public funding for groups and organizations that only promote minorities like operation black vote will also be eliminated under the new laws expected to be rolled out next year. This is a shot in the foot for the Labour party and their mutlicultural machine as it will hurt many of its own racist groups that are stricly for non whites.
- Chorlton And The Wheelies, Wheelie land, London
B Gare of Norfolk your comments and other comments like yours betray a worrying incapacity to reason. To find some kind of moral equilvalence between the BNP and so called 'black organizations' is simplistic and diverting. It is a shame that these organizations have to exist, but many have originated to address the real disadvantages that many black people face, in the workplace and society. Until you can empathise with the experience of being a minority or facing predjudice or discrimination then you will not understand the need for minorities to identify with and support one another. I think you will find that when the issues of acceptance and full integration have been fully resolved these 'talking shops' and support groups will cease to exist.
- Patrick, London
WIth labels and organizations such and the black police officers association, maybe the BNP should change it name to the White National Party, that sounds equal?
- Jabba The Hut, New Addington, Croydon
It appears that the BNP requires that Britain should withdraw from EU before officially loses its status and is changed into 12 Regional Assemblies.
Since it will be illegal for any Political Party to warant this after the next General Election.
Should this be in the party political manifistos so that the general public know what is at stake and the true price of their votes?
- Bill, Hay~Heath UK
Good I hope it gets overrun with blacks and asians - that'll teach the racists!
- Hahaha, London
Will the Black Polic Association now be affiliated to the BNP or is it still a black only organisation?
- Fred, London
"as with the "Black Police Officers Association" and other such associations based on race, religion and sexual orientation -applicants tend to weed themselves out !"
The Black Police Officers Association admits anyone.
- Michael, London
B Gare - Give us an example, name one of these Black organisations that refuse entry to white people. You may find it more difficult than you think.
Nolan Londonist
How about Westway Housing Association in West London, just looked at their website and it states:-
"Westway is a black-led, community-based, housing association based in West London"
"By giving opportunities to black and minority ethnic communities to participate fully in the provision of social housing in their local community"
That's one for starters, need I say more?
- P Staker, London.
Hi Nolan,
Here`s a start. Gloucestershire BPA.
Full membership Open to all black Police Officers, Civilian Support Staff and Special Constables directly employed by the Gloucestershire Constabulary.
Associate Membership Open to all Police Civilian Support Staff and Special Constables who are directly employed by Gloucestershire Constabulary, but ineligible for full membership.
You cannot join as a full member if you are white. Plenty of others in the same vain. They are not difficult to find. Told by a black police officers about membership to the BPA it was only about black police officers. It existed solely for black police offciers and it had no interest in the welfare etc of white police officers. The police federation is there to represent ALL officers regardless of race creed etc so why not let them get on with it and we should not have these devisive black orgainizations which have had their day and are now doing more harm than good to integration in this country. It just spawns a them and us culture.
- B Gare, Norfolk Gorleston
How convenient that they agree to change their policy just before their appearance on Question Time.
- Mg, London
W G Read and B Gare, correct me if I'm wrong but there aren't any Black exclusive political parties or organisations in the UK so stop your whinging and lose the chip on your shoulder. There has always been and always will be a disadvantaged white working class. You can't blame ethnic minorities for that - which is what the vile and treasonous BNP are doing. The solution is not to blame your Black or Asian brothers many of whom are also disproportionately economically disadvantaged but to do what any aspirational person does. Study hard, work hard and improve your standard of living. Only the ignorant, sad and inadequate would vote for those racist facists! They are the White Taliban, spreading hate and preaching harm to those not like them. But I would love to see a few brave Black and Asian people cause mischief by joining those gangsters and exposing their thuggery!
- Veritas Noire, Purley
Is John Wadham, of the Equality and Human Rights Commission going to take some of these black organizations to court...so white people can join...if they wish too!!! I bet not!!!
- Mark Egan, Sidcup
"Great, now the commission has made a start perhaps they will turn their attention to the plethera of Black organizations in this country, which are illegal under our current anti discrimination legislation"
Your rant would have more substance if you actually named one of these organisations. In my experience, not only do they generally admit white people, but make a point of highlighting this fact in their literature.
- Michael, London
ok, what's teh current membership of the BNP? how many people do they have in membership? it might be a simple thing to get the same number of black/afro-Caribbean/Asian people to join and thus force a change in constitution.
- Mike, London
There is nothing far-right about the BNP. They are the living embodyment of socialism - anti free movement of labour and capital, plus determined to interfere in every aspect of our lives from a national centralised bureaucracy.
- Pilko, SE1
B Gare - Give us an example, name one of these Black organisations that refuse entry to white people. You may find it more difficult than you think.
WG Read - are you saying that the "British way of life" includes discrimination against Black people? If so, I'm glad this is another nail in its coffin.
- Nolan, Londonist
So, if 10 years from now, a BNP with a black, jewish, sikh or hindu leader, gets elected and passes laws that aim to forcibly repatriate all British Muslims to the lands their forebears came from, does anyone believe that will represent anything other than a fascist government?
- Danny, London
W G Read, Leicester - even for the obviously 'I'm not racist but..' BNP supoprters brigade, you're comment is bizarre.
How is opening up an organisation to a wider membership a 'nail in the coffin for free speech and the British way of life'?
Get a grip man.
- Liberal And Proud, London, UK
Somehow I don't think there'll be a stampede of blacks and asians banging at the BNP's door!
- Goggs, London
Just goes to show racism and discrimination cut both ways.
- Jimbob, Kensington
This is quite an easy concession for the BNP to make lets get serious few if any people from BME groups are going to join are they..maybe an investigative journalist or two ..in fact I am near certain that will happen soon but as with the "Black Police Officers Association" and other such associations based on race, religion and sexual orientation -applicants tend to weed themselves out !
- Jason Stone, Stratford, Newham
What a bunch of hypocrites how can a white racist party admit non white members. Just shows they will do and say anything to get a bit of power.
- Mick, London, England
It would be funny if a Black or Asian became head of the BNP.
- Mark H, London England
Quote: John Wadham, of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, said:Political parties, like any other organisation, are obliged to respect the law and not discriminate against people.
Great, now the commission has made a start perhaps they will turn their attention to the plethera of Black organizations in this country, which are illegal under our current anti discrimination legislation - or was it politically expedient just to have a pop at the BNP?
Having these black organizations is devisive and does nothing to enhance race relations. We now regard ourselves as an inclusive society and the BNP will only make political capital out of this case unless similar action is taken against black organizations whose only purpose in life is to look after the interests of blacks. The commission and the politicians will only have themselves to blame for the backlash if they stop here and the Secretary of State for Community Affairs yesterday could not understand why the white working class in this country feel they are being unfairly treated. Look no further then this.
