Plans for new university buildings unveiled

15 Oct 2009

Plans for new buildings in the biggest development undertaken by the University of Oxford in more than 100 years have been unveiled today.

The Mathematical Institute and the Humanities Building and Library would be the two key buildings in the university's 10-acre Radcliffe Observatory Quarter (ROQ).

Professor Anthony Monaco, chairman of the ROQ board, said: "These two projects are at the heart of our academic mission on this site, with fantastic designs by both architects.

"They offer state-of-the-art research, teaching and study space for faculty and students while offering new avenues through the site, exciting courtyards, gardens and squares, all with views of the Radcliffe Observatory."

The Humanities Building and Library, bringing together the English, history, theology and philosophy departments, would form the centrepiece of the whole development. There would be teaching space for up to 1,500 students.

The mathematics building would house 500 academics and support staff, and be central to the studies of 1,000 undergraduates.

Designs for the proposed buildings are going on display in the city's St Luke's Church today. Planning permission is to be applied for later this month.
