Swine flu figures double every fortnight

Anna Davis, Health Reporter

The number of people with swine flu is doubling every two weeks, new figures show today.

27,000 people caught the virus in the last week, compared with 18,000 the previous week.

It means around 26 people in every 100,000 made an appointment with their doctor because of flu like symptoms.

One person in London has died with swine flu in the past week, taking the total number of deaths in the capital to 33.

Currently there are 74 patients in hospital in London suffering from swine flu, and 14 of them are in intensive care.

Dr Simon Tanner, Regional Director of Public Health at NHS London said: “We are currently finalising plans to soon begin an extensive vaccination programme across the capital. We will target those most at risk of developing severe illness, as well as frontline health and social care workers. This will protect both our staff and their patients.”
