The man charged in connection with the assault on pop star Leona Lewis this week is an X Factor reject.

Peter Kowalczyk, 29, who was sectioned under the Mental Health Act following the incident, auditioned unsuccessfully for the show in London

Lewis, 24, who won the X Factor in 2006, was forced to pull out of a series of interviews on her promotional tour after she was punched in the head while signing copies of her autobiography Dreams at Waterstone's in Piccadilly on Wednesday.

Kowalczyk is now being treated in a psychiatric hospital.

His parents today described him as “very sick” and in need of full-time care.

His father Tomasz said today: “He wants to be a singer. He went along and queued at X Factor.

“How far he got with it? Nowhere.”

Kowalczyk has been charged with common assault and is due to appear before magistrates later this month.
