Ex-rugby star banned for drink-driving

19.10.09

Former Wales rugby captain Colin Charvis was today banned from driving for two years for drink-driving.

The 36-year-old was also ordered to pay a £900 fine by District Judge Gerwyn Watkins at Cardiff Magistrates' Court.

The court heard that Charvis was pulled over by police at 5.45am on October 4 when his Range Rover was seen swerving across the road.

A breath test found he had 87 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The limit is 35.

Charvis said he drank eight pints the previous evening on a night out with friends in Cardiff but said he stopped drinking at midnight and thought he was safe to drive.
