Speaker opens his Commons house to gay weddings

Joe Murphy, Political Editor

Speaker John Bercow wants to open his historic residence in the House of Commons for gay weddings, the Standard can reveal.

In a symbol of equality, he is seeking permission for civil partnerships to be held for MPs.

The move by the Speaker, who is determined to show Parliament is modern and inclusive, would provide gay couples with an equivalent to the traditional right of MPs and peers to marry in the crypt chapel under the Commons.

Gordon Brown has called for civil partnerships to be held within the Palace of Westminster.
