Doctor blamed over Caesarean death

Anna Davis, Health Reporter

A new mother died after her obstetrician withheld the drugs she needed, an inquest heard.

Laila Chowdhury's uterus failed to reduce in size after an emergency Caesarean section at St George's Hospital in Tooting and she lost more than two litres of blood. Dr Harichandana Panjugala was twice reminded to set up an infusion of syntocinon, Westminster coroner's court heard, but refused.

Coroner Dr Shirley Radcliffe said it was a "bad clinical decision". Mrs Chowdhury, 24, of Mitcham, died five weeks later on 13 March. A narrative verdict was recorded.
