Grabbed by long arm of the law: fake cards crook threw from flat

A fraudster who turned his flat into a factory for a multi-million-pound credit card racket was caught red-handed trying to shred and dispose of the evidence.

Eamon Zada, 27, funded a jet-set life of expensive holidays, cars and jewellery with the money he gained in his role in the mass manufacture of counterfeit credit cards.

Specialist police tracked down a flat in Notting Hill as the hub of the operation and raided it.

They said they had to smash through a reinforced metal front door with multiple locks. On entering, officers said they found Zada surrounded by hi-tech equipment, hastily shredding credit cards.

He flung a bag of the counterfeit cards out of the window, only for it to be neatly caught by a police officer standing in the street.

Zada was arrested after the raid this year. He faces jail today after pleading guilty in August to three fraud charges, in a scam worth more than £1.5million.

Zada's part involved putting stolen electronic credit card data onto the magnetic strip of the fake cards. According to police sources, this was the last stage in the process of creating the fake cards that were intended to con banks around the world.

Speaking before Zada's sentencing, Detective Inspector Richard Fisher, from the City of London police's economic crime directorate, said that the racket was a "sophisticated global fraud, facilitated from [Zada's] own front room".

Further investigations by the unit have led to the recovery from the counterfeiters of more than 3,000 credit card numbers.

These had been issued by banks from Europe, North and South America and the Middle East. Mr Fisher added: "There is increasing concern at the level of credit card fraud in the UK with fraudsters racking up multiple offences.

"Individuals need to be cautious with how they use their credit cards and if they are defrauded, to report it to the police. Then we can we track down the criminals and provide the necessary support to the victims."

Zada is due to be sentenced today at Southwark crown court.

Jilly, maybe I've missed something but where does it say that this guy isn't English? Or are you saying that we should re-patriate anyone who commits a crime?
