Tony Blair
Leader in waiting? Tony Blair could be named EU president in a secret summit this week

Miliband: Blair is the best choice to lead in Europe

Nicholas Cecil, Chief Political Correspondent
26.10.09

Tony Blair was hailed as the best candidate for EU president because of his “coalition-building skills” — despite his role over the Iraq war.

Foreign Secretary David Miliband told BBC Radio: “The best candidate, if he is willing to be a candidate, is a former British prime minister who has shown persuasive advocacy, strong coalition-building skills and the ability to be taken seriously around the world.”

However, Opposition MPs flatly rejected the argument, highlighting how Mr Blair and President Bush divided the world with the invasion to topple Saddam Hussein. Shadow Europe Minister Mark Francois said: “Tony Blair was a divisive figure in Britain and in Europe as Prime Minister.”

In a speech to the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London today, Mr Miliband said Britain must take a lead in Europe if it is to retain its world influence.

The secretive appointment procedure means Mr Blair could effectively be named president of Europe - with no say for voters. A special EU summit, possibly next month, is expected to be held to finalise the decision.

Vauxhall's Kate Hoey said: "I don't want anyone to be president of Europe." She believes there will be considerable anger if Mr Blair, who she accused of taking Britain to war illegally in Iraq, became the "voice of Europe".

Glasgow's Ian Davidson said: "The Lisbon Treaty has not yet been ratified. I still hope that we will have a referendum in the UK and that the position of president will not be created."

Mr Blair is also facing opposition from the smaller EU countries, including Belgium and Luxembourg, who believe that he may represent the interest of big nations rather than all the 27 members.

Blair is the only PM that has made me ashamed to be British. God help us if he becomes the EU president.

- George Rossier, Torquay UK

Best bit of news I have read is that all Parlkiment has to do is REPEAL the 1972 Common Market act and we are FREE.....I recall the words ; Free at last Free at Last "...just rememeber4 that when they sday WE CANTY GET OUT or THERE IS NO ALTERNATIVE - Yes there is FREEDOM.

- Clif, London

If ever there was a reason to believe that the EU is an entirely fraudulent and undemocratic body then this possible appointment only serves to demonstrate the fact.
Blair was a conspicuously unsuccessful PM of a country situated at the margins of continental Europe. Indeed, since leaving office and in his new role as an 'envoy', he has delivered nothing of consequence for the human race, but has earned millions as an expensive guest 'speaker'.
Perhaps his worst 'sin' however, was the total disregard, perhaps even contempt, with which he treated the mother of Parliaments, reducing it to a rubber stamping body for the 'Blair Project'.
Given these circumstances, how can this dreadful apology of a politician, be allowed to represent and speak for 60 million Brits, never mind the other 450 million living in the rest of the EU.
Mr. Milliband should be encouraged to continue his support for Blair and at the same time continue to promote his own candidature for the position of 'Foreign Minister'. Then, with a touch of good fortune we may end up with neither.

- Arnold Lewis, Salinas, Alicante, Spain

Our politicians almost shout that we have a say in our future and they expect the voters to believe that we have the sole legal process to deliver the
requirements with a vote for whoever they think delivers.
What no one tells you about is the small print.
The EU now decides what all 27 members will do, certainly once the Treaty is fully ratified.
Most of the bad news per nation is swept under the carpet until well worn hacks tell everyone what is going on.
Carry on printing boys and girls. We are lost without you!

- Macdangler, Wimbledon SW19

Now, please, Mr Bean! Do we really need another parasite in Brussels!!!!

- Steve, Bromley

Keith, you made the mistake of assuming I'm a Tory, so you fell into that one by your own design, old chun.

As for the Falklands War, how do you work that one out? Illegal? By whose decree? It was British territory that the Argentines invaded.Or are you trying to re-write history?

Still, I suppose if you cannot win an argument, as manifestly by your reply you cannot, just try and rubbish the other view. The problem is, the old adage two wrongs do not make a right applies.

- Captain Black Of The Mysterons, Broxbourne

The problem is simple - Blair lied cheated and shredded his way out of No. 10 and the crimes he committed there - lies to the people - rip offs on his expenses - breaking, not bending, intelligence "reports", and now, maybe, a plot to multicuturualise the UK without us knowing about it, which could have, and has, been used against anyone who questioned laxing of immigration rules. Blair was, is and will always be a fraud. He as EU President!!!! Never!!! And it must never be allowed to happen. He was a "puppy dog" of Bush, and we are now paying with the bodybags that return to the UK with the remains of our brave soldiers, underfunded, under equipped, and unappreciated by the likes of Blair, Brown and those who lied to the British people to engage in a war that is virtually unwinable. Look at history, and especially at the history of Afghanistan BLAIR MUST NEVER HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH WORLD POLITICS. BLAIR AS PRESIDENT OF THE EU??? WORLD WAR III?

- John Grotrian, Sussex / England

Surely Tony Blair would be an entirely appropriate president for this duplicitous organisation.

- Peter, Ipswich UK

Mr Miliband must sit for an extraordinarily safe seat to make such a suggestion. His comments merely serve to demonstrate how out of touch with reality our leading politicians really are.

"...strong coalition-building skills and the ability to be taken seriously around the world.”? The mind boggles!

- John C, Leatherhead, UK

The collapse of the Yugoslav Republic and the creation even of more mini-states led to more instability in an already volatile region. Croats turning on Serbs and vice versa, and Muslim Bosnians turning on Serbs and vice versa, enclaves like Kosovo formed
Moldvia and Montenegro non viable states. The region is still in chaos after 15 years and will be for another 15. Sure there were atrocities but on both sides.

- Dhan Raj, Basildon

Keith Price, Luton England - re-writing history now? I won't re-hash facts and figures history for people who put their own slant on matters as they choose - the history books are there. The facts are there. Interpretation is another matter though - many have 'coloured' their views based upon other outside issues. For instance, just because you have an undying hatred of Maggie Thatcher it doesn't make everything she and the Tories under her did illegal, no matter how hard you try to make it so.

I may not be perfect, but at least I TRY to see reality based upon fact rather than blind prejudice.

Blair for EU president? Why not? Hopefully DC will have the gumption to pull the UK out of that mess and leave Blair and Co to their empty ambitions.

- Rogan, Irving

Val Daniels, Mijas Costa, Spain

I always thought you were niaive in your pro-New Labour postings Val, but never had you down as THAT niaive!!. The "election" of a new EU President will be done behind closed doors by the various Heads of State. Even that is likely to be domionated by France, Germany, Italy and dear old Gordon (assuming he doesn't realise in time what a massive vorte-loser it will be here in the UK, in which case he'll do his 'McCavity act again & fail yo show up!!!) As far as i'm aware this 'annointment' won't even be put to the elected members inthe EU Parliament. Even if it is, it will be whipped to the extent that it's a done deal. When will you (and Keith from Luton) grow up politically & recognise that there is absolutely NOTHING that is democratic about the EU, Tony Blair, Gordon Brown or New Labour. They view the electorate as idiots who can't be trusted to make decisions like this.

- Malcolm, London

G W Bush's Poodle for President is an unwise appointment. He has the typical City Lawyer mentality, money grabbing with no regard for anyone. Let him return to his legal roots and leave the EU alone. We don't need a parasitic right wing psychopath as President of the EU. We are still suffering the effects of his stay in office. Let the position be filled with the right person.

- Kellie, London

As Keith (Lonsdale, Doncaster) points out where is the demoncratic mandate for the role and the position? How on earth can there even be talk for any such candidate when there has been no popular vote for either the constitution (oops Lisbon Treaty) or the candidate.

Where is the "free press" in pointing out this most obvious omission? Has the Evening Standard like all other papers forgotten that we are suppose to be in a democracy? The installation of a presidential figure without the endorsement of the ordinary citizens of the EU is a deception and a fraud. Seems to suit the leading candidate too.

- Kevin, London

Allow the British to chose their on President. We are still suffering the effects of Blairgate. Opening the flood gates to thousands of European immigrants when we are a small Island and our public services are already pushed to its limit. Allowing foreigners to take the jobs that could be taken by the British at a lower price. Allowing businesses to farm out their work to Asia and causing an increase in unemployment. Gas and Electricity are overpriced and the bossess are making excessive profits at the expense of its users being ripped off. No price control in supermarkets. Food bills are up 100%. We suffered enough under Tony's weak leadership. We already have an incomptent Prime Minister and we don't want the return of Executioner Tony Blair.

- Ann, London

Hold on - aren't we waiting for an enquiry in which Blair is meant to testify. I accept that he will walk away from this somewhat besmirched but walk away he will as there seems to be no power/desire to prosecute for his lies to the public et al. How can anyone under this situation be considered for an active role as head of the EU. Whats the difference between his actions and a soldier being brought up before the courts for just 'following orders', or do we get the admission that Blair was also just following Bush's orders....

- Wassup, london

A disgrace!

Why should the architect of the greatest foreign policy disaster for this country of all time hold such an important, albeit non-executive, post.

The main culprit is Brown not holding a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty as promised.

WE NEED AN ELECTION NOW !.....

- Bill Clinton, Camden, UK

Dhan Raj, Basildon:
"not to mention the War and the Balkans."
Are you suggesting that the war in the Balkans against genocide was NOT justified..?

- Mark H, London, England

ncompetent, opportunistic freeloader with nothing to commend him. Hopefully the next Tory government will refuse to deal with him. Like all these hopeless socialists(Mandelesohn, Kinnock et al) they can now freeload on europe and out taxes for the rest of their lives and contribute nothing. the sooner we depart from htis ghastly organisation the better.

- Malcolm Suffolk, Bury St Edmunds

Supported also by NuBliar clone David Cameron.

Welcome to the gulag!

- Ted, Swindon

"The secretive appointment procedure .."

The sooner we leave that anti-democratic white elephant the better our society would be. We can also rip up the Vermins Rights Act at the sametime.

- Frank, Home Counties, England.

Blair should be immediatley called for a grilling over the Labour Immgration lies inquest if true he should be stripped of all honours and face a jail term. An immediate General Election should be held before the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty and Blairs Presidency.

- Simon, London UK

Tony Blair for EU President, Bring it on!

#Keith Lonsdale
You are wrong, of course. We all elected MEPs to serve in the European Parliament in the same way as we elect MPs to Westminster. It is these democratically elected MEPs who make the decisions in Europe, not some small cabal.

- Val Daniels, Mijas Costa, Spain

Who would like to join UKIP now? I for one if this is the kind of democracy that young men and women are dying to see installed in Afghanistan.

- Colin Macpherson, Gramat France

"Blair took us into an illegal war."
Fully supported by the Tories, just as labour had backed the Tories when they took us into the illegal Falklands War.

- Keith Price, Luton England

This is a disgrace, he is going to get the job due to his celebrity status rather than achievements or qualifications for the role. As ever with Bliar there is a whiff of dishonesty too,as we never did get our vote on the Lisbon Treaty, yet he seems to have done well out of it!! Message to Mr Hague and the Conservatives - please inform the EU that the UK does not and will NEVER accept President Blair, and that come June we will be restoring Democracy by allowing the people to have their say on the Lisbon treaty.

- Nickspurs, London

Can we find out who he has in mind to go to war with,so we can be prepared this time, then perhaps some of the other EU countries could join us on the next war.

- Davey_Bouy, Chertsey UK

Pleeeease no, not him.

- John Bull, London

Maybe there is hope that this cretinous parasite Blair
will not get anywhere near the post of President of the EU.
Poland is reported to be completely against him, and many
commentators on the French TV channels are saying that
no British politician would be considered for the job simply because the UK is not in the EuroZone.
But if Blair ever were to be appointed, cries of "The Hague !" would resound around the world and keep on increasing, and this could be very embarrassing, both for
the UK and for Europe as a whole.

- John, Brno, Czech Republic

Keith Price, are you totally devoid of any objective comment on Labour, or are you a man who sits at his PC giggling away at his own attempts to wind up Tory or anti-Blair posters.

Blair took us into an illegal war. He fabricted the truth in "the Dossier", repreated before Parliament. Papers relating to various of his questionable activities have been destroyed, such as his expenses vouchers. No notes were made of a Cabinet meeting shortly before the death of Dr David Kelly. These are but a handful of the highly questionable things he has done.

The man is a walking disaster, about to take the same european bus to great wealth that the buffon Kinnock did, yet you insist on supporting him. There is loyalty and then there is bloody-mindedness and then there's crass stupidity.

- Captain Black Of The Mysterons, Broxbourne

As much as I hate to admit "BLIAR" is a smart cookie.
He saw the brown stuff to hit the fan (G BROWN) and did a legger. He saw the expense scandal coming and shredded his receipts. He engineered a escape clause as Middle East Envoy and had planned on the EU Presidency some while back.

The sad matter, he is likely to get it and get away with the enquiry into the Irag war. You can see the two fingers he is giving us all with that smirk.

- Asw, HK

Quote: Frantic horse-trading is due to start at a summit this week in Brussels on who should become the new supremo.

More like Frantic Donkey trading?

Looking at Bambi’s picture today; he is looking more handsome than ever; the burden of being a multi millionaire must be helping him retain his youth.

He reminds me of the story; the Emperors new clothes?

- Mickinlondon, london

Have been watching the new series and specials of "The Thick Of It" which with this news only confirms that this supposed satire of politics is actually a reflection of the true reality. Blair should be in prison not running the EU.

- John David, London

So Goodbye to Democracy and hello to absolute Dictatorship !

- E. Nuff, london

EU politicians are stupid if they think Blair will be an asset. Wherever he goes representing the EU, there will be people calling him a murderer. How can Brown and his ministers support him without even blushing. They know how much British people despise the man and his wife.

- Beatriz, London

Brown is too stupid to realise that if this comes to pass the Labour Party is extinct in the UK.

- Fred, London

Pass the sick bucket. A vomiting virus is about to hit Britain. Originating from the fleas off a fat cat.

- Janet, panda

'There can be no greater measure of the undemocratic nature of the EU than the installation of this vainglorious traitor as its figure head, without a single vote being cast anywhere in EUrope by any ordinary EUropean'

Well said,Keith.
The future is starting to look very depressing indeed. All the people who predicted this tolitarian New World Order years back, and who were laughed at or ridiculed, appear to have been right after all.

- Stephen, London

It never ceases to amaze me that Tony is more popular in Europe (and America) than he is here. I can't think why. Tony carries too much baggage around with him, not to mention the War and the Balkans.

- Dhan Raj, Basildon

Wake up and smell the coffee!!. Asia's nations leaders have just met to copy the EU in forming closer ties to advance peace and economic progress. That group will now cover half the world's population. Even Russia has now applied to join.

It is essiential for Europe to streamline its decision making process by implementing the Lisbon Treaty asap. It will then need to have a leader that other countries will at least recognise. Remember the embarrassment around the world when John Major was elected as the PM and noone had ever heard of him?

- Sam, London,UK

European politics is supposedly about democracy, and, representation. Who does Blair represent other than himself? In sofar as democracy is concerned, I think there are a few 'banana republics' around the world who could teach us a thing or two in that area. Personally, I think politics stink, and, I will no longer participate in what can be best described as a pathetic charade. I suspect I will not be on my own!

- Kevin Sullivan, Roehampton, London.

Labour know that they are out of the door to No. 10 in the next 8 months. They also know that the Tories have deep divisions about the role of the UK in Europe. They will use Bliar's appointment to disrupt the next 5 years of government. The only beneficiary will be Bliar's pension pot.

PS: Keith, learn to count - Bliar was PM for 10 years, not 14, although it felt like a lot more.

- Nobby Clark, Perth, the Scottish one

How can Tony Blair be considered for any public office when an official inquiry into the catastrophic Iraq War is still being held? In the opinion of many people in this country Mr Blair has the blood of innocent civilians and dead British soldiers on his hands.

- Simon Ellis, London

Well done Tony - you deserve it. 14 years as PM qualifies you acove all other contenders. The Tories are bound to knock you, but you beat them all in the ballot box and you will defeat them all again

- Keith Price, Luton England

More votes for the right wing parties!

- Tojo, Hythe, Kent

Please no more of this democracy I cant handle it, Neil " All Right " Kinnock who could not get elected to high office in this Country, who opposed the EU is now made for life, and now we have Tony " The peace envoy " Bliar, at least he will now be able to afford all of his mortgages, at our expense of course.

- Steve M, London

This is a sad day for justice as this megalomanic cheat is given yet another reward for absolute lying. How many dead are due to his decisions and greed???

- Ataxslave, london

They must be mad!!!! This man is disgusting and a liar. He has led this country into debt and an illegal war where we have lost many men. This man is not fit for anything let alone the EU Presidency.

- Jk, London

Never, in the history of mankind, has anyone ever been LESS worthy. Poor Churchill must be turning in his grave.

- Marianne, SW France/London

If the Europeans want him so much they are welcome to him.
And frankly they deserve him.

- Jimbob, Kensington

Oh well, it will be worth loads more seats at the next election for the tories. What are the Labour Party thinking of at the moment. Have they lost their marbles?Brown and Mandleson are already losing the next election for labour. With Blair in the top job at the EU,the back lash for Labour will be unimaginable. Xmas will come early for the tories and the liberals. If Blair gets in then we must have a referendum - the man is a liability to world peace and our way of life. Heaven knows what he and Mandleson, who is obviously engineering this from the inside and will be given some plum EU job for making it happen, will do. I just cannot believe how nieve all the other EU leaders are being over Blair`s appointment as head of the EU. Lets just hope it doesn`t happen!

- Brian G, Norfolk Gorleston

The gravy train rolls on for another champagne socialist.

- Shallotman, Basildon

This man forced us into an illegal war in Iraq and has the blood of thousands of innocent Iraqis and soldiers on his hands. Why on earth are they making him president of Europe? Being the Prime Minister of this country was bad enough. God help us!

- Naheed, London, UK

So,the new world order is about to begin. How lucky we our in the UK to be governed once more by comrade BLIAR.

- Dave, london

Will this be the "beginning of the end to civilization as we know it", if Bliar gets appointed as EU President?

Hasn't he done enough "damage" for one lifetime?

- Fraser, Telford Park

There can be no greater measure of the undemocratic nature of the EU than the installation of this vainglorious traitor as its figure head, without a single vote being cast anywhere in EUrope by any ordinary EUropean.

- Keith Lonsdale, Doncaster
