“So brave”: Davide Cohen, whose father Haim, left is donating a day’s takings to cancer research

A barber whose son died from a rare brain tumour is holding a fundraising hair-cutting day to raise money for research into the disease.

Haim Cohen, 44, will give a day's takings from Life Barbers in Covent Garden- whose customers include Robert De Niro and Brian Conley - to Great Ormond Street hospital, where his son was treated.

Ten-year-old Davide died in September last year just seven months after being diagnosed with a tumour called pontine glioma.

Mr Cohen, who has managed the shop in Drury Lane for 20 years, said: "He was such a bubbly, happy boy. He wanted to be a fireman and he was always tearing about the place."

The money raised on 4 November will go to a charity run by Great Ormond Street called Kiss It Better, which funds research into children's cancers.

Mr Cohen said: "When I started to find out more about the tumour I was told there was not enough money to pay for research into the condition. It is terrible. Davide was such a brave boy. I remember telling him everything was going to be fine. He looked me in the eye, and said, 'Daddy, I'm not going to be fine'. He knew he was going to die.

"His dream was to go to Euro Disney but we couldn't. He couldn't even move. It is such a terrible disease. Nobody should have to go through it." Pontine glioma starts in the brain and can cause loss of vision, internal bleeding and paralysis. Fewer than 40 children a year develop it in Britain.
