Emperor in waiting: the statue fragment found 45 years ago

Sussex statue may depict Nero as a boy

A fragment of sculpture found at a Roman villa in Sussex could be part of a rare statue of the Roman emperor Nero, say experts.

The statue head was uncovered at the Fishbourne Roman Palace near Chichester 45 years ago and was long thought to be a boy related to the royal family who lived there. But a new three-dimensional scan shows the fragment appears to be the emperor as a youngster. That would make it only the third depiction of the teenage Nero in the world. The others are in the Museo Nazionale d'Antichita in Parma and the Louvre.
