'Climbdown' over £20m cuts for TA

Paul Waugh, Deputy Political Editor
28.10.09

Gordon Brown was today accused of a "humiliating climbdown" over military cuts as he confirmed a last-minute £20million reprieve for the Territorial Army's training budget.

David Cameron claimed the reversal of MoD plans, after an outcry from the Tories and some Labour MPs, underlined "once again the complete loss of the Prime Minister's authority".

No 10 today said the move was not a U-turn as Mr Brown had only recently been made aware of the plans. The Prime Minister said that "having talked to the Chief of the Defence Staff I decided it was the right thing to do" to reverse the £20 million cuts.
