An investigation has been launched after a first-year Oxford University student died from meningitis.

Antonia Bruch, 18, from Belsize Park, died on Tuesday after contracting a bacterial infection.

The Health Protection Agency is monitoring students and staff at Regent's Park College where she was studying theology. Miss Bruch started at Oxford in September after attending Highgate School.

College principal Dr Robert Ellis said: "Antonia was a popular and valued member of the college." Her close contacts have been given preventative antibiotic treatment.
