It's a baby boy for Wayne and Coleen Rooney

Wayne Rooney became a father today when his wife Coleen gave birth to a son. The couple have named the child Kai Wayne Rooney.

Rooney, 24, had missed training today amid speculation that the birth was imminent. His wife, 23, was said to be a week past her due date. He is believed to have been at Liverpool Women's Hospital for the birth.

Another woman at the hospital said: "Coleen checked into the hospital last night. She is already a week overdue and like all of us she is impatient to have the baby."

In contrast to other footballers' wives, Coleen chose a NHS hospital for the birth. Victoria Beckham, Jamie Redknapp's wife Louise and Frank Lampard's ex-girlfriend Ellen Rives all chose London's private Portland hospital.

Rooney, the Manchester United and England striker, may now sit out United's Champions League tie at Old Trafford tomorrow against CSKA Moscow.

Hmmmm classy.... they make Jordan look middle class!

- David, soton

Kai is a scandinavian name. Quite old in as far as it is usually owned by guys of about 60 odd.

Most recently used in the Danish kids TV show of the 80's and 90's Kai og Andrea. A touching story of a frog and a parrot

- Loki, Roskilde, DK

It's exotic, innit.

One syllable - should be easy enough for Wayne to remember.

- James, London

Good name! It means FOOD in New Zealand.

- Rhoda, staines, middlesex

Has "IT" got his looks and her brains?

- Dave Davies, Basingstoke, Hants

Kai - classy name. Not.

As for giving birth in an NHS hospital, I'm sure they have private rooms.

- Blue Baby, London
