Safety fears over railway cuts
Dick Murray05.11.09
Network Rail is axing hundreds of maintenance jobs on the West Coast Main line - starting a safety row.
Research by the RMT union found that half of the job cuts planned are targeted at theline, the busiest rail corridor in the UK. It cited a derailment in 2007 at Grayrigg, Cumbria, where one person was killed and 22 injured, which was caused by poor track maintenance, as evidence of its concerns.
Network Rail said no final decision had been made about the job cuts.

Half a mo´. In another column you are saying "Virgin Train's chief executive Tony Collins said (aircraft) flights between cities across Britain would virtually end because of vast improvements to the rail network." How is that going to come about if Network Rail is axing hundreds of maintenance jobs?
