Information children desperately want

SOME parents with strong religious views will be furious that Ed Balls is about to force their children to learn about sex. But many more will be secretly relieved.

The trouble with teaching children about the birds and the bees is that even today, adults avoid the issue. But problems arise when the state takes a similarly bashful approach. Repeated surveys of pupils have shown they are desperate for more useful information. As schools and parents look the other way, they turn elsewhere - and sometimes choose the internet with all its dangers.

Teachers may not like to be told they have to right the wrongs of society, but it's a fact of life.
