Met's coup dossier on Mark Thatcher

Ross Lydall
6 Nov 2009

Scotland Yard has been given a dossier alleging that Sir Mark Thatcher, the son of the former prime minister, was involved in an attempted coup in Equatorial Guinea.

It was passed on by Jose Olo Obongo, the prosecutor who handled the case against Simon Mann. The mercenary has just been pardoned after serving 15 months of a 34-year sentence for his part in the attempt.

Whatever Mark Thatcher's involvement and faults, it is well established that Simon Mann went ahead with the attempted coup despite the fact it had become public knowledge and was the talk of Cape Town. Simon Mann nevertheless went ahead and not surprisingly, was captured. Simon Mann's internment was therefore his fault. Now it is everyones fault, except his own.

Given that Simon Mann was abducted from Zimbabwe in exchange for fuel, then subjected to a show trial, I fail to see how the Guinean legal system has any credibility at all.

Unfortunately for Mark Thatcher the government is going to use their stooges, the Met, to make some political mileage out of this. He will probably have some uncomfortable months ahead before the case finally collapses. I wonder if Mrs Blair Booth will prosecute.
