David Haye beats boxing's Goliath

08.11.09

Boxer David Haye turned giant killer as he won victory in his bout with the "Beast from the East".

The 29-year-old Londoner saw off the colossal Nikolai Valuev, despite an 11-inch height gap and seven stone weight difference, to be named the new WBA World Heavyweight Champion.

He took his opponent to a full 12 rounds and was deemed to have won on points by two of the three ringside judges in Nuremberg, Germany.

His win means bookmakers will have to pay out around £2 million, spokesman for Coral Simon Clare said.

Betting was split between patriots and boxing fans who opted to back the enormous Russian.

Bookmaker Paddy Power said it had seen four times as much money put on Valuev than on Haye.

The British victory puts them in profit but punters still won £50,000 to £60,000.

William Hill expected to take £1 million in bets on the fight and was offering odds of 28/1 that the Briton would win the match and then go on to win BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
