The sniper who terrorised Washington for three weeks in 2002 will be executed today.
Barring the last-minute intervention of Virginia's governor, John Allen Muhammad, 48, will be executed for the murder of Dean Harold Meyers, who was shot at a petrol station. He was one of Muhammad's 10 victims.
The US Supreme Court has rejected an appeal for a stay of execution for the man known as the "Beltway Sniper", because many of the killings took place near the city's ring road.
Muhammad's then teenage accomplice, Lee Boyd Malvo, is serving life in prison for his part in the attacks.
Muhammad was due to die by lethal injection, but his lawyers today criticised the court ruling.
They have asked governor Tim Kaine to commute the sentence to life in prison because they say Muhammad is mentally ill and suffers Gulf War Syndrome.

If he were in the UK he'd get life, then released
after a few years!
