Gordon Brown
The prime Minister says that the population will not hit 70 million as predicted

Gordon Brown accused of ‘death-bed’ immigration vow

Nicholas Cecil, Deputy Political Editor
12 Nov 2009

Gordon Brown was today accused of a “death-bed conversion” on immigration by bowing to calls for tougher controls.

He announced a tightening up of the Government's points-based immigration system and signalled a crackdown on visitors granted student visas who then start working here illegally.

While denying that he was imposing an immigration cap, he insisted that the population would not rise to 70 million by 2029 as forecast.

Responding to public concerns over immigration, highlighted by the British National Party's electoral success, Mr Brown said: “Do I get it? Yes, I get it.”

In a speech in Ealing he also pledged that more British workers would be trained to fill job vacancies.

Lib-Dem home affairs spokesman Chris Huhne said: “It's extraordinary that Labour is having a death-bed conversion on immigration after years of inadequate border controls.” The Tories accused the Government of offering tougher rhetoric but not better policies after a union poll showed immigration was the biggest reason for Labour voters deserting the party.

Shadow home secretary Chris Grayling said: “Gordon Brown's speech had a hollow ring. This is the Government that tried to cover up a deliberate policy of increasing immigration.”

Tory MP Nicholas Soames and Labour backbencher Frank Field, co-chairmen of cross-party group Balanced Migration, said: “The points system has no limit, affects just 20 per cent of immigration, and will not stop the population hitting 70 million in 2029.”

Mr Brown announced today that hospital consultants, civil engineers, aircraft engineers and ship's officers are being removed from a list of workers needed from abroad. British workers will be given more job opportunities, with an extension of the period for which jobs must be advertised before overseas workers are sought. A review will consider whether visas should be granted only to foreign students on degree and postgraduate courses.

All three main political parties treat the people of the U.K. as children. They offer no choice on any of the main issues. All three offered the people a say on the E.U. Constitution (Lisbon Treaty) at the last election, then decided that 'the children' wouldn't make the right decision on the U.K. becoming a part of a new larger country. The main parties always knows "what's best for the rest", always put their opinions and views above those they represent. Capital punishment. Immigration. The U.K. changing from country to E.U. province. On every major issue the small elitist clique knows what's best for the rest, saying one thing before an election and doing the opposite after the election. Labour to Conservative to Labour to Conservative to Labour to Conservative. When will the people finally wake up to the fact that Labour and Conservative and the LibDems are not their only voting alternatives?!?! At next year's 'lollipop time', shake things up!

NJ, London cannot see what the problem is if people feel that communities that have been totally transformed into something totally alien to them......and if we disagree we are a raving racist.....you are not Gordon Brown in disguise are you?!?!?!?

I have seen my area turn into a mini version of Lagos, i sit on the bus and im the only white person on it, i walk down the high street and all i see is money transfer and specialist ethnic food/hair shops. In a area that i once felt was my own, i now feel totally alienated by the effects of mass immigration. Most English people have been forced to move out of areas that they have deep social roots in because of this drastic change.

But just keep closing your eyes and ears to people's genuine concerns and just label us all racists, it shows who the real narrow minded bigots are

The political truth is that Labour hope all these millions of immigrants will become UK citizens and then vote for Labour, who granted them their status. The reason the evil BNP have (2 MEPs, Assembly Member and Councillors) is due the lawless Labour immigration policy, which has been uncontrolled. The white working class no longer have a party, which represents them on bread and butter issues. What I think is very British is the way the population, on the whole, has not turned on the immigrants and have rejected the BNP while wanting balanced immigration policy. What we have is an unbalanced and poorly administered one. If its broken change the Government.

So based on your extensive research can you explain what it was that gave you an almost overwhelmingly instant dislike of those places? Somehow, saying that "I told you so" about the Labour gerrymandering agenda on immigration over and over again never did make me feel any better. And now that GB is playing election games with it just leaves a greater than normal sour taste in the mouth. (It's a little like a cynical retailer that pushes prices up steadily to well over the product value, then announces to all that he's having a sale - and bringing the price back down to where it should have been in the first place, to bring people into his store, deluded into thinking they were getting a comparative bargain).

You don't have to be a Tory to be disgusted by this - plenty of people who would more naturally vote for the Labour party are too, I'm thinking.

What a load of garbage from Brown. This government has implemented a deliberate policy of destroying the " English way of life" and diluting our nationality. We keep being told that we should rejoice in our multi cultural society but no government has ever asked the electorate if they wanted one. It's not racialist , more a question of numbers and the difference those large number of immigrants make to the social fabric of society. In simple terms we have had too much of a good thing. These must be the most hypercritical words ever to come from Brown's mouth and heaven knows this is some achievement considering the rubbish we have listened to since he became PM.

We have far too many unskilled immigrants from third world nations already in this nation. Labours past and current polices have created high crime ghettos all around London, nothing they say now will change this fact. Immigration must be tightened to such a point that only highly skilled people in unique fields should be allowed in, and then, only on temporary status for 5 years. No benefits should be made available to any migrant until they have worked continously for 5 years in the UK. If they lose their job they should return back to their country of origin, its that simple. Saying all this, the Labour party IS NOT the party that would enforce such common sense and that is why they will lose the next election by a landslide.

It is not the immigrants that are the problem it is the fact that central government did not pay the local authorities for the extra burden on education, housing, social needs, e.g. health needs, translators and the burden fell on Council tax payers. If you are serious Mr Brown instead of using your surveillance on the middle class use it on the illegal immigrants in this country and deport them. Only then will the voters take you seriously. You can fool some of the people all the time, all the people some of the time but you seem to think you can fool all the people all the time. I love it when politicians, near election time,
say "we need a national debate on immigration"

That debate was held 30 years ago by the old
working class, 20 years ago by the lower middle
classes, & now by the educated middle classes.

You see, only the very rich can afford private education now,
professional & high skill jobs are being exported or subject
to a Dutch Auction with immigrants.

Left/Liberal Hampstead types are now suffering street crime,
in fact only BBC employees & the very wealthy still
don't need that conversation.
Yet.

The debate was had years ago Mr Brown, we are not
BNPers to want our country back.
But you, Mr Brown, & your value free party have tied us
into the EU & "human Rights"
You cannot & will not do anything.
I just hope Cameron develops a backbone on this one.
Otherwise UKIP is the only answer, & it's being bankrupted
by this government & its agencies.

Nj - Actually, I have been to all the places I mention. I lived in Balham for 12 years, firstly in Du Cane Court, and then on Boundaries Road. My local was Blithe Spirit. I had the misfortune to visit Tooting on a number of occasions. I worked for Credit Suisse in Cabot Sq, Canary Wharf, so frequently saw Limehouse and Shadwell from the DLR. As for Southall, I've walked through the town centre to Riverside Studios numerous times. Now how would I know these small details if I'd never been to the places?

As for the immigrants on buses up to Scotland, the newspapers in Scotland did a big expose on them not so long ago. So it's common knowledge up here, not barside bunkum. Still, I suppose people inside the M25 prefer to bury their heads in the sand, rather than acknowledge the existence of things beyond - except when it suits them.

After 12 years of looking after our borders, sometime in the future Gordon Brown would like start controlling them. Who believes that?

The question we all have is not about the asylum seekers – the UK is always open to those wishing to be free of oppression (Although Gordon Browns country seems a strange place to escape that). It is the migrants that have lied, cheated and foisted themselves up on us, then played the system. These are in reality criminals, carrying out practices that no UK citizen would be permitted to do without serious consequence.

Gordon Brown over the last 12 years has always be a pretender, he has pretended to be Chancellor, he has pretended to look after our armed forces, he has pretended to secure our borders while at the same time encouraging a flood of what he hopes to be his potential voters should ever have the balls to stand in an election. He is also a pretend leader, which passes the country to others to oversee in the thinking when it all goes wrong it’s not him.

This announcement is not an action, it is a pitiful attempt at electioneering – something he has never tried before.

The practice of allowing an illegal immigrant bail should be stopped as they have no fixed abode and should be placed in a detention centre or prison.
