London hospital to help women grow a breast

Women in London could be the first to be offered a technique that allows them to regrow breasts from their own cells if they have had a masectomy.

A surgeon from the London Breast Institute and St George's hospital is planning a clinical trial of the procedure in March.

The breasts would feel and look more natural than saline and silicone implants, helping women who have had a breast removed because of cancer.

Professor Kefah Mokbel, who is leading the trial, said: "It is potentially a very exciting development. I believe it will be successful."

Surgeons would be able to create a new breast composed of fat, but without breast tissue and milk ducts. Professor Mokbel hopes mammary stem cells can be used to regenerate the whole breast, including nipples and milk ducts.
