Still standing: a tabby’s demise sparked rumours that Baroness Thatcher had died

Canada in a spin over Moggy Thatcher's death

Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper came within a cat's whisker of wrongly announcing the death of Margaret Thatcher today.

A rumour spread after Canadian transport minister John Baird sent a text reading: "Thatcher is dead."

In fact, his message referred to the passing away of his beloved pet cat, which was named after his political heroine.

But it was misconstrued and the rumour spread like wildfire around a gala event in Toronto where 1,700 VIPs were gathered.

Mr Harper's staff prepared a draft statement of condolences and tribute to the 84-year-old Iron Lady before a call to 10 Downing Street established Baroness Thatcher was alive and well.

Canada's Moggy Thatcher was a 16-year-old grey tabby.
