Barack Obama risked angering his Chinese hosts today by saying that individual rights and freedoms should be available to all.
The US president told students in Shanghai that certain freedoms were universal, not just limited to Americans.
He was careful not to attack the Chinese government directly over its record on human rights violations and censorship of the internet.
But he said: "We do not seek to impose any system of government on any other nation, but we also don't believe that the principles we stand for are unique to our nation.
"These freedoms of expression and worship, of access to information and political participation, we believe are universal rights."
In a queston and answer session with students after his speech Obama said there was no reason why the United States and China - a "majestic" country - should not co-operate.
"We have known setbacks and challenges over the last 30 years. Our relationship has not been without disagreement and difficulty. But the notion that we must be adversaries is not predestined," he said.
Obama later flew to the Chinese capital, Beijing, where he was to meet President Hu Jintao.
