Cost of ginger to double after dry spell
16 Nov 2009The price of making Indian and Chinese dishes could rise as the cost of root ginger may more than double.
A price war has kept the cost to £1 per pound, but buyers warn that it could hit £2.15 as the amount grown in the Far East has fallen because of a dry summer.
Farmers in China, who produce a third of the world's supply, are also planting less ginger after years of low prices.
Supplies are also being hit by growers trying to cash in on the high prices for ginger seed, reducing the amount planted, and China's strict export laws after a pesticide scare.

I use it in Japanese dishes such as Agedashi Doufu. I also find it great for relieving an upset stomach, and supposedly it has a lot of other health benefits. Luckily it's already pretty cheap to buy at my local Chinese supermarket.
