Hair transplant for West End's Sir Cameron Mackintosh

Four decades ago, he was a backstage assistant on a show which epitomised the Sixties counter-culture.

Now, Sir Cameron Mackintosh, one of the West End's leading impresarios, is overseeing a new groundbreaking staging of the same musical, Hair.

The Tony Award-winning production by New York's Public Theatre is to become the first Broadway show to transfer its entire cast to London when it opens at the Gielgud Theatre next April. The musical tells the story of a hippy community facing the prospect of serving in Vietnam.

Sir Cameron said today that conflict in Afghanistan made the show relevant again. He said: "Hair has always been far more than a musical. It's a celebration of life, love and freedom. I'm proud to help bring this production with its wonderful company into one of my theatres."

OK, transfer a show to London with an unknown American cast. It'll sink quicker than Spring Awakening. In the current economic climate people want stars, as the unfortunate problems experienced by the producers of ***** Up your Ears proved.
