Old Bailey bomber held over soldier deaths

17 Nov 2009

A woman convicted of an IRA bombing of the Old Bailey more than 30 years ago has been arrested in connection with the deaths of two soldiers in Northern Ireland.

Marian Price, 55, was being held for questioning in West Belfast over the drive-by killing in March of Sappers Patrick Azimkar, 21, of Wood Green, and Mark Quinsey, 23, of Birmingham.

The soldiers, who were about to be deployed to Afghanistan, were shot dead outside the Massereene barracks in Antrim as they collected a takeaway. The Real IRA claimed responsibility.

Price is a leading member of the 32 County Sovereignty Movement, considered to be the Real IRA's political wing. She was one of eight sentenced to life for planting a car bomb outside the Central Criminal Court in 1973. The explosion killed one and injured 200.

A total of 14 have now been arrested over the March shooting, including a 39-year-old man in Coalisland, east Tyrone. Two men have been charged with murder — Armagh Republican Colin Duffy, 41, and Brian Shivers, 44, of Magherafelt, Londonderry.
