2,000 off-licence workers lose their jobs

20 Nov 2009

Almost 2,000 jobs went today when the administrators of the collapsed wine retailer behind Threshers, Wine Rack and The Local off-licence chains announced plans to close another 381 stores.

Administrator KPMG said the move would mean 1,908 redundancies within high street stores, and 34 at First Quench group's head office in Welwyn Garden City.

Stores will shut by 16 December, each holding a huge liquidation sale, starting on Tuesday. KPMG said: "There has not been sufficient interest in the stores so we have no option."

Wine retailing has gone nuts in the last year or two. The shops are full of 2 for 1 offers where the wine was nowhere designed to be sold for the original price. It is a minefield where your only friend is trial and error.

The days of the off-license are numbered and who cares ? atrocious anti-theft blockhouses full of alcopops and super-strength lager - the only people who use them are schoolkids and tramps, even on 'Eastenders' they prefer to buy their wine from the Queen Vic.

With 381 stores for sale, the only ones which will be successfully sold are the ones where you can park. There was one of their shops near me, not only did the staff act as if they had a Masters Degree in Wine Appreciation from Eaton, but the wines were too dear, and I had to walk too far to a car park I had to pay for. Forget it, Aldi is next to Morrisons they both have car parks, and Which magazine said that Aldi Beans were the best.Tonight I am going to open Lidl red at £3.00, Cheers.

Not surprising, only the length of time they've held on. Average wines sold at extraordinary prices; even when they were running their 3:2 promotion you was still better off going to Sainsburys!
