£12m redevelopment of Billy Elliot theatre to upstage its West End rivals
25 Nov 2009THIS is the first image of how the Victoria Palace Theatre - home of Billy Elliot - will look after a £12million redevelopment.
The work involves rebuilding the stage, so the musical will need to find a new home.
It is part of a £1billion project which includes a revamp of Victoria station and new tower blocks in Buckingham Palace Road and Bressenden Place. The 1911 Grade II-listed theatre will be refurbished with air conditioning but its white façade will be kept.
Land Securities is giving £2.5million in funding.
Susie Bridges, of architects Arts Team, said: "They can rebuild the stage so it can put on the kind of musicals its capacity deserves. The theatre will be able to compete with other West End theatres."
The project will not start until at least 2015.
