The British Museum has unveiled its first multimedia tour.
From today visitors will be able to rent handheld computers for £4.50 to guide them around the exhibits.
The computers will show background information in 10 languages, pictures and video for 220 items. They will include guided tours of three collections: the Parthenon sculptures, highlights of Ancient Egypt and the Korean Gallery.
The museum has developed different versions for adults and children.
"We found that people generally don't read the labels on items," said Matthew Cock of the museum. "The guide is based on an audio tour, but we are able to show a lot more information, whether it be a map of where the object was found, information about it or even a video clip."
