His other designs have included the Gherkin and “wobbly” Millennium bridge, but now architect Ken Shuttleworth has moved on to multi-armed ocean life.
He wants to create a building, already nicknamed “The Octopus”, to act as a west London gateway welcoming visitors into the capital for the Olympics. Developers said the structure could be completed in time for London 2012 if they get the go-ahead soon.
The 170ft building near the Chiswick roundabout would contain 25,000 square feet of floor space across five storeys.
The multi-million-pound Octopus would house offices, and the outside would be used as an advertising hoarding.
Property developer London & Bath, which is behind the plans, said the M4 — one of the main routes into central London from Heathrow — lacked any landmarks.Developer Kim Gottlieb called the site a “fabulous position” for Olympic visitors to see the building.

What a shame its not a green roof, another opportunity lost to help reduce carbon emissions.

A true eyecatcher to cheer one after miles of dismal suburban roofscape. This most creative essay in tradition and innovation deserves congratulations.

Well done London & Bath, something to give new visitors a very postive 'Gracious Me' after a tiring overnight arrival into Heathrow.

What an axtremely refreshing and exciting piece of architecture; London needs more of these designs and stop keeping their heads in the sand. It will provide a perfect and very colourful landmark in what is a very depressing area near the outskirts of our capital which badly needs an uplift such as this - full marks to the architect and the developer.

Why does a landmark have to be hideous?

It looks as tacky as the olympic logo.

OMG, Ken show some imagination, the man is just trying to develop a 'Landmark' building something that is lacking in this part of London... I think this building would be a fabulous addition to the London Chiswick Skyline… Good luck to property developer London & Bath and, lets hope for their sake that Ken or any of his mates are not related to anyone on the local planning committee…

Couldn't this man design a building that looks like a building? We rather like that kind of thing in London: we don't go in for gimmicks.
