Rail revamp closes line for 14 weeks

Dick Murray, Transport Correspondent
21 Dec 2009

TRAIN services between Gospel Oak and Stratford are to close for 14 weeks.

Passengers, who number more than 17,000 a day, will have to use a bus service instead.

The old North London line - now London Overground and operated by Transport for London - will close between the two stations on Saturday 20 February and not reopen until Saturday 1 June.

During that time TfL will carry out signalling and track renewal, platform lengthening and station refurbishments.

Replacement buses will run every 20 minutes six days a week. On Sundays this will be reduced to two buses an hour.

Ian Brown, managing director for TfL London Rail, said: "This was one of the most neglected railways in the UK when we took it over two years ago and these are essential works."

This is a Ken Livingstone vanity project. Boris should scrap it immediately.

"the ELL will be about to open (at least partially)."

There's a rumour that the ELL will open early, in March, during the closure of the NLL, possibly with a limited preview service.

Its a shame there cant be a partial service but given the work they are doing; replacing the current lines, adding the extra two freight lines, new overhead and third rail electrification, shifting the NLL over to allow the ELL into Highbury, extending platforms, complete resignalling (etc etc) i can see how it would require long closures regardless. Best to get it over with i suppose, especially as when it reopens the old trains should be gone and the ELL will be about to open (at least partially).

ANY improvement to our railways is always welcomed....pain has to be suffered. I just hope this project timing is pessimistic and actually finishes before the end date.
