Santa robber
Sackful: the armed robber caught on CCTV inside the bank

This is a ho-ho-hold up - Santa robs bank 'to pay his elves'

A robber dressed as Father Christmas pulled off an armed bank heist in character, telling terrified customers "he had to pay his elves".

The FBI is hunting the man after he escaped with a sack of cash. He fled not by reindeer and sledge but in a grey car.

The man entered the SunTrust bank in Nashville, Tennessee, yesterday morning dressed in Santa's trademark red furs and sporting dark glasses. He demanded money at gunpoint.

Witness Richlyn Jones said: "He took his little red sack and pulled out a gun and told everyone to be still. He went to the front of the teller line and started asking for money and putting it in the bag.

"He was actually jovial, which is scary. He explained that he was robbing the bank because Santa had to pay his elves."

After loading his sack with the money the man fled the building. "He had the whole outfit on - even the shoes," said customer Jimmy Edwards.

"I laid down as soon as he walked in and pulled that gun out.

"I was just wondering if he was going to be stupid enough to hurt somebody but once he started getting what he wanted I could see he was going to leave."

No one was injured during the robbery and police have not revealed how much money was taken.

A sense of humour will carry him through as the police track him down and deal with him, or fail to find him.
