Bodies of three soldiers flown home

19 Jan 2010

The bodies of three British soldiers killed in Afghanistan by improvised explosive devices were returned to Britain today.

Captain Daniel Read, 31, was a “totally selfless” bomb disposal expert from Kent who had disarmed 32 bombs and returned to the front line after being injured in an explosion last October. He was killed on 11 January near Musa Qaleh in Helmand province.

Corporal Lee Brownson, 30, of Bishop Auckland, County Durham, and Rifleman Luke Farmer, 19, of Pontefract, West Yorkshire, died in a separate explosion near Sangin last Friday. They were members of 3rd Battalion, The Rifles.

Rifleman Farmer was clearing a route in the dark with his metal detector when the IED exploded.

The three bodies were flown back to RAF Lyneham this morning before being driven through Wootton Bassett.

Captain Read was married to Lorraine. Cpl Brownson leaves a pregnant wife, Leeanne, and two daughters, Ginalee and Morgan.

A total of 249 British military personnel have been killed in Afghanistan since 2001.
