Google today said it would stay in China even if it was forced to close down its local search service.
Eric Schmidt, the company's chief exeuctive said it would continue to pursue its other business interests in the country despite so far failing to come to agreement with the authorities over its refusal to bow to censorship.
“We have lots of other business opportunities in China – we would like them to be successful,” Mr Schmidt said.
He added: “That's not the only thing we're doing in China.”
Mr Schmidt refused to comment on the progress of discussions with the Chinese authorities, though he stressed that Google was still intent on stopping censoring results on its local Chinese search service, and said the company would act “in a relatively short time”.

With billions of dollars in revenue at stake, this was always going to be a non-starter and Google were never really going to leave China. Money talks.
