A British holidaymaker today told how she was arrested and taunted by police in Dubai after she told them she had been raped.

The 23-year-old was on a romantic New Years break with her faincé who proposed to her while they were away. But the holiday of a lifetime turned into the holiday from hell' after she was attacked on the night the pair celebrated their engagement.

The Muslim Londoner, who wished to remain anonymous, said when she and her wealthy 44-year-old boyfriend went to report the rape, they were thrown into jail for two days and not allowed to leave Dubai until she signed papers to say the attack had never happened.

In return, they told her, charges of having unmarried sex with her partner and drinking without a permit, which could have led to six years in prison, were dropped.

After a four week nightmare, she is now back home, but the stress has caused her to break up with her fiancé and she is awaiting the results of a HIV test.

The couple flew out to Dubai on New Year's Eve and the victim's boyfriend proposed to her at five-star hotel The Address. After saying yes, they celebrated with two bottles of champagne.

She later passed out on a sofa in the toilets and recalls being followed in by a waiter. The following day, after examining herself, she realised she had been raped.

The couple immediately went to the police. She said: “I'd just told them I'd been raped but they were asking how many times I had sex in the hotel room with my boyfriend and what positions I preferred.

“They were sniggering. I was crying. I felt utterly humiliated.”
