London was warned to expect snow showers tonight and tomorrow with up to four inches forecast for Kent.
There will be a risk of widespread ice as overnight temperatures fall below zero. Temperatures in the capital will hover around minus 1C in the morning.
Forecasters said the cold weather would last into the weekend but said there would not be a return to the big freeze of last month.
Byron Chalcraft at the Met Office said: “It will stay cold but the snow and sleet showers should ease in the South-East.”
Kent police said drivers are being warned to take extra care and a Highways Agency spokesman said there are warnings for drivers to take care throughout southern and eastern England.
John Hutchinson, forecaster with MeteoGroup, said snow showers in the East would be broken up by sunny spells today and tomorrow before turning heavier towards the end of the week.
He said: "Most of the sleet and snow will be in eastern areas, and Kent will see the worst of it.
"Through today there will be sunny spells with the wintry showers in eastern parts and temperatures will rise to between 3C and 5C. That bit more sunshine will mean the snow will struggle to settle during the day, though it could settle over the hills in north-east England.
"Tomorrow, the sunny spells will turn increasingly to snow showers which will continue overnight and into Thursday and Friday.
"There could be significant accumulations in eastern and south east England with Kent getting the worst of it."

"Gary. It may have escaped your notice that this is the website of the London Evening Standard. Indeed, the very page on which you type is called 'this is London,’ The headline of the article is ‘heavy snow to hit London…’
I don’t see the word Surrey anywhere, and unlike you, I was really looking. So why don’t you go away and read your Surrey Gazette/Comet/Backwater and see what is has to say about the weather where you live, there’s a good fellow"
Err, hello! 40% of people that work in London live in the home counties. Doh!

looks like Bizarro world me, doesn't have a real job.
I think we can do without simplistic playground analogies, "SE trains did there best"? is that like on school sports day, when everyone gets a medal?
pathetic.

Scotty: SE Trains brought in the emergency timetable the evening before it had even snowed! They are pathetic, but charge enough for their fares.

Just because central London wasn't affected,Last time snow was forecast, we who live out in Surrey (25 miles from central London)and the Home Counties got 15cms+ and it remained for nearly 2 weeks..

According to the front of the Daily Express last week, by now we should all be suffering Arctic conditions, the temperature should be minus 16 and travel chaos will affect everyone from Lands End to the Isle Of Skye.
So I bought an extra bottle of milk, some Hob Nobs and a large sliced Hovis in preparation.
Reading The Express is educational. It certainly taught me a lesson.

@ Paul B - Give SE Trains a break, they did their best under difficult circumstances.
This country really has turned into a nation of moaners and whingers.
Enjoy the snow - I certainly did last time. I took a couple of days off work and went sledging with the local children.

Last time heavy snow was forecast we got next to none. These weather forecasters may as well give up. They are hopeless in the extreme. I have a better record than them. And I forecast by assuming the tomorrow will be the same as today. I'm right more often than professionally paid forecasters.

Mark, judging by the quality of forecasts in previous weeks, it'll probably be hotter than El Azizia. But don't let that stop your cheerless pessimism.

Hmmm - I'm meant to be going to the south coast by train from London on Friday. Judging by the way the railways performed in the last lot of snow I wonder if it will be worth the trouble.
